Strobe Timing a Norton Atlas with a Boyer Bransden Electronic Ignition
Here is a little trick I discovered and haven't seen posted anywhere else. For Boyer timing the later Norton Atlas (1967-1968) with the distributor at the back of the engine, I made a timing disk 3 inches in diameter. I though there must be a better way than only relying on the static ignition method for setting up the Boyer.

1) Remove the spark plugs and primary cover. Rotate the engine to TDC. I won't go into detail here on how to accomplish that. It has been explained before.
2) Print and cut out the paper timing disk. It should be almost 3 inches in diameter.
3) Take a punch or an awl and punch through the center of the disk. With the disk centered on the awl, place the point of the awl in the center of the recessed end of crank shaft.
4) Rotate the disk until the TDC mark on the paper timing disk lines up with the rotor mark. Take another sharp awl and scratch a small line in the stator casing. I made a small punch mark through the paper disk. Now do the same thing for 30º BTDC.
5) Remove the disk
6) Take a small straight edge and line it up from the center of the crank shaft to the marks you scribed. Scratch the line deeper and long enough to be clearly seen.
7) I painted a little white line on the rotor for visibility. Black might have been better.
8) Now you have your timing marks to use with a timing light similar to that of the Commando case. I used 30º and not 31º because it is close enough.

That's it, it worked perfect for me.

Cheers,

I love the Atlases. The featherbeds handle so nice. This is a customers bike. Now I need some dry weather to break it in.

Very nice looking classic, they are so sweet looking, I now just got to pull my finger out and put my 1960 Manxman together, but it didn't come with the stock parts as it was used for racing.

Very nice work George.
