I'm re-building a 71 Commando with what appears to be a 72 front end and I've found that the thread on the steering head stem are rather worn for the 1st 3-4 turns. In an attempt to clean these threads up, I tried to find a suitable die. But I could not make the thread. I read somewhere the nut is 7/8 -20 but there's not 20 threads to the inch (looks more like a coarse thread). Any guesses?

Thanks

No need for guesswork, '71-on stem thread is 7/8 - 14 therefore it's UNF.

7/8 - 14 certainly looks about right. Is that the same yoke (and thread) for the later model 850s as well? I'm thinking that the front end may be as late as a 73. It has the stem and top yoke as one part.

Still trying to figure these boxes of bits out.

Thanks again.

All stems are the same '71-'74 as far as I know.
However the yokes themselves are not-because the yoke geometry differs due to the 1 degree diffence in headstock angle between 750 and 850 frames.

All 850 upper and lower yokes should be marked "ANG" on their underside.
