This has probably been covered but... Its almost a year to the day when I totaled my HD and woke up in the ER. A month in the hospital and a year of rehab, I am ready to kick the Commando over and get back out. Its been sitting over year. I put fresh fuel, and am draining the sump. Should I pour oil over the rockers? Run it at fast idle when it starts? Whats the best way to keep the cam and lifters healthy? Tips welcome.
Thanks in advance

I would put a squirt of oil in each of the rockers. Always good for the cam. Check your battery.
take easy steps.

My long storage start up procedure is to remove spark plugs, kick over until I see oil returning to oil tank. If it has wet sumped drain crank case first. Good luck with your return to riding Nortons!

A HERETICAL ANSWER

Hi all,
i have read dozens of opinions on how to ‘Reawaken the Sleeping Beast’, each one more complex than the previous, both with motorcycles and aeroplanes.
Whilst it sounds like heresy, if it is only 12 months I would ensure that it has not wet dumped, the fuel smells reasonably fresh and everything looks ok, I would give it a generous tickle, a few priming kicks and then start it.
Run it for a few minutes at slightly elevated rpm, say 1500.
If all is good, just ride it

Yes to sump and pouring oil over rockers and down the tunnels so you moisten the cam. Kick it a few times with the plugs out as MG says. Yes on fast idle and then ride within a couple mins.

Welcome back to the riders club! I am still out of action in rehab...

I be doing a complete oil change and fresh fuel even after 1 year the fuel can go off and moisture in the oil as well go over the whole bike, good luck and welcome back.

Good job on getting back on the horse, I'm sure it's been a lot of work. I went through some health issues a few years ago, and thinking about getting back to riding was a big motivating factor for me. Here's my 2 cents ...Tire pressure and inspection, chain; inspection, gearbox level, all fasteners front to back, as ashman recommended as well. Cables, their condition and possible adjustment. Check lights, specifically that Your brake light is functioning. Lastly, don't know where Your'e located, but here in southern Iowa, I'm
witnessing a lot of distracted driving, not to mention some of these people were obviously poor drivers in
the first place ! Pulling out in front of You only to turn 1/8 mile down the road, or veering from their lane into
Yours, looking up from the phone in their lap just in time to yank it back to their side.....
Gotta be aware these days. Welcome Back for sure !
