I think with any motor, you need to play to it's strengths. The Commando engine has plenty. My 850 motor is near standard, relatively speaking - yet is still fast enough to win. In any case, it is not only the motor, but the whole package. The handling of my bike suits the motor. If it had any more go, I'd need to make the steering more neutral, so I would be slower in corners. You cannot 'point and squirt' with a Commando-based bike - you will never win a drag race against four-cylinder bikes, down a long straight. You need to start accelerating from way back in the corners. Then all you have to do is hold your own towards the ends of the straights.

I never speak with confidence about road-racing unless I am on a winner. I know from experience how good or bad my bike is. The fastest bikes in Australian Period 4 Historic are Rex Wolfenden's 1100cc methanol-fuelled CB750 Hondas. The last time I raced, I was up with them in two races, in the third I turned under the three leaders at turn two and was beside the lead guy when my fuel line popped off. I now have 6 gears, so if there is a next time, I will get better starts.
