What size or type are all of the grease fittings on a 71?
I have rebuilt the rear wheel and need to grease up the speedo drive for assembly. Got a new tire!!
What type of fitting is it? My standard grease gun wont fit the darn thing or any of the other fittings I see.
Thanks

Anyone? I did do a legitimate search. No luck.
I am going to re assemble tomorrow and Sunday.
How do I get the speedo drive lubricated properly?
Thanks

Your 71 might be different, but on my 75 I just use a standard grease gun. Not all the grease goes in because the fitting isn't exactly right, but some goes in, at least enough to lube a speedo gear. For as often as I lube that thing, I figured it was better to waste half the grease than buy a special grease gun fitting.

If you've got it far enough apart, it's also possible to clean it out and re-pack by hand, but this involves having the speedo gear completely off the wheel assy.

I have a Needle Nose Adapter for Grease Guns that looks just like this one:

The needle adapter is plugged on to the standard coupler fitting. The adapter's sleeve is then pulled back over the coupler so that it doesn't fall off while greasing your parts. Auto parts stores should have something similar to this, or you might find one on a Google search. This adapter works on all grease fittings and is handy for working in tight areas as well.

Alas its pretty much a non issue as mild lack of lube to the little gear drive ain't gonna wear much but the big ring gear sure does and zerk fill will not get grease to that vital area unless big grease globs oozing outside. Only way I know to grease ring gear is dismounted. Regardless of how well you maintain this drive better shop now for another or search up the preventative or repair threads.

unscrew the exisiting zerk and screw in a regular one just to grease it. Rotate the wheel as you squirt the grease in hopes of getting some grease spread around inside. I have a guys bike here that the speedo gear box was junk from lack of maintemance. He told me his owners manual never told him he should. ?? DAH ! he bought the bike new in 1972 and it's been sitting the last 20+ yrs. And as already mentioned it can be hand lubricated if off the bike.

grease it once a month and fill it till it oozes out while turning the wheel. Its the only way. use the best grease possible. I use Slick 50 grease which has Teflon in it.

That style of nipple is a low pressure fitting. The more modern high pressure type is now the universal standard so just fit those and save yourself the hassle. The low pressure type use the old style plunger grease gun that simply push on the fitting an have no real seal to stop grease going everywhere. The modern grease gun with lever to pump grease is know as high pressure as it is far more effective at forcing grease where it is supposed to go. Over many year working aged machines in engineering shops i have changed many of these old frankly useless types.

You can use a normal grease gun by just using a rag like an old T shirt or whitey tighty between the fitting and the grease gun. The grease goes right thru the rag and doesn't leak out around the sides.

Just did drives on my Atlas and Mk III with a standard $12 grease gun and cartridge from Home Depot. The attachment included fit both fine.

Ended up using a needle style end and removing the fitting. I have never seen fitting like it.
Its all good. I am re assembling the rear wheel tomorrow. I had a new tire fitted, and all the bearings replaced.
The bike was sitting for about 20 years and everything just went to hell. It came to light with a clunk in the back.
All of the rubber cush pads for the rear wheel had disappeared. All of them. Figured I had better go through the whole thing.
Front wheel, tire and brakes are next over the winter. Safety first. I should have it back up tomorrow AM.
Starting to get cold here now.

This a British push type oiler or greaser for B.I. zerks.
