Re: Sone nice Nortons

Nice thread ashman, thanks for posting the pics. I'm currently stuck at Bagram AFB in Afghanistan waiting for a flight down range, so it helped to pass some time. I haven't seen any motorcycles here, but then I've only been here a couple of days. Cj

nice, but wheres the laverdas!

The Laverda club in Brisbane is only a small club but they put on such a big bike show every year, they use to have the show under the Story Bridge for such a long time but the last 2 years they have moved to the Cleveland show grounds as they out grown the old site, if I took pics of all the great bikes on show I would still be there  the only down side of the show was the heavy Police bliz around the area  with the new site they had a very large area for motorcycle only parking  this is a great show for the whole family well done to the boys and girls from the Laverda club and all their surporters.

The two 650SS's at the start of your pictures brought back memories. I rode a company 650SS every day about 45 miles of coutry two-lane roads from my home in Kenilworth to Wolverhampton for almost all the 18 months I spent at N-V. In retrospect, it was the best feature of the job!

My Norton made it to Japan Ashman, and my wife bought a cover and locked it up with a cable lock, so it's waiting there for me. But I got offered a job over here in Afghanistan and couldn't pass up the $$$. Now I'm a retired Navy guy working on Army helicopters. It's supposed to be a 12 month contract, but that remains to be seen. I knew I miss my wife and kids, but I didn't realize how much I'd miss my Commando. Cj

Hi CJ

Good to hear, but what you hear what is happening over in Afghanstan, is the money worth it ??? Any how my friend keep safe and think about what you can do with the Norton when you get back home with the extra $$$ after owning my Norton for over 36 years now I know what you mean as it has been with me long before the wife and kids came along and when they give me hell I just jump on the Norton go for a big ride up in the mountians as I know it never talks back

CJ, no need for a lock in Japan 8)

As for Afghanistan, from what I heard, there is NO political will to stop the talibans. For the inquisitive minds, I got this information from the guy who my daughter bought her restaurant from. He is Afghani and worked for 4 months as an interpreter from december 2011 to april this year. He was supposed to have been there for a full year, but he came back after the unit he was assigned to was decimated by a bomb. One of the vehicules, the one he was supposed to be in was blown up, the bomb went off under the vehicule and the blast was so severe, the thing went up in the air and landed on its side, the guys were all stapped in, but two guys lost their lives when the starps broke uppon coming back down. He owes his life to being sent to another vehicule b the soldiers in the truck that blew up.

Whatever the salary, I wouldn't go there, I will take the snow and cold anytime and be safe.

Thanks for your concern, it is well founded. I feel pretty safe here at this base as it is way up north, besides, the Army guys need their helicopters in good working order and I figure I can help out until Janurary next year, so I might not do the full monty so to speak ...LOL (12 months). The thing that bothers me at the moment is that I'm in huge tent that is transient billeting with 200 other folks, & sleeping on the top rack of a rickety old bunk bed, and the matress is really clapped out ... I miss my tempurpedic!!!!!
