Has anyone painted their crankcase and gearbox with silver paint like the originals from the factory? What paint did you use?

PJ1 Yamaha silver case paint. Resists oil and fuel but can't stand up to stone chips and grit blasting from the front wheel, no paint can do that. It's a nice finish.

Spray the silver paint on a rag and wipe the rag on the alumiinum. This prevents a lot of paint build-up and is easy to control. I did my head this way also using foam tipped swabs to get into the nooks and crannies. It has held up well.

A local engine rebuilder (car race engines) told me that this is what they do, which surprised me.

For my silver barrels I use silver Duplicolor engine enamel. Looks pretty close to alloy.

Cheers,

Wurth aluminized spray paint for engines. Expensive but good.

In a recent overhaul of my 850, the rebuilder treated the bead blasted cases with sodium silicate. It seals the aluminum and leaves a natural aluminum finish. I am very pleased with the look.

I highly recommend VHT cast aluminum brake drum, rotor and caliper spray paint (SP 735). It's easy to use, durable, heat resistant and extremely close in color to stock. The PJ1 Yamaha silver, although a perfect match to stock color, discolors spontaneously (and reliably!) to a gold-tinged silver hue within weeks of painting.

Good luck!
