Hi All.
When you must shim the oil pump feed?
1971 shows two shim, 1972 no more.
I have found on my 1971 two shim but the oil pump seal was very compressed.
Thanks.

Adjust the quantity or thickness of shims to give 0.010" (0.25mm) seal compression.

Edit. Engines before 150120 had no oil pump gasket (06-2447). If a pump gasket has been fitted then any existing shims may need to be removed.

I purchased the single shim and a pump gasket which is paper thin. My '71 motor did not have either when I disassembled it.

I assembled everything, shim, oil pump gasket with a new timing cover gasket, then checked the gap at bottom of cover. Was comfortable with it but probably did not need the shim.

Will remove it and put in a new seal if the cover leaks.

Hi Les,
I mean thank you.
The bike had two shims and the seal was very compressed.
The question is, can a very compressed seal give problems.

Probably not, unless the compression was enough to distort or split the seal? As the manual warns: "Over compression of the seal will render it unfit for further use." so if the seal has been over-compressed it should be replaced.
