Hi Gents,

I'm just putting my front wheel back together, and using the sealed bearings this time.

Does one eliminate the washers and seals now?

Anyway.....I did omit them, and after I put the disc on, and the last spacer-dustcover...there seems to be a slight gap between the double row bearing and the
spoacer- dustcover....maybe a 1/16th of an inch or so.

Is that the space left over from leaving the seals out?
Is that OK ?

I appreciate your thoughts

When going to a seal double row bearing it is usuaally require to machine the inner wheel spacer pt. # 061955 by about .059" due to the fact that the sealed double row bearingfor this application is slightly wider by this amount. This modified part is available at Old Britts. If doing it yourself, you need to reduce the width and the lip for the flange. See Old Britts for this information. That being said, you may have a bearing of the proper width, but it doesn't sound like it.

Since 1985 I've fitted the sealed single row bearing on both sides and a machined spacer to make up the difference. Initially because I couldn't find a sealed double row bearing and I've never had a failure. Don't ask me for the spacer dimensions it's that long ago.

I just know I shouldn't have wrote that :(

I got a double row sealed bearing from Walridge (front and rear) and couldn't measure the difference between the old and new one with my calipers. So I put it in, with all the old parts, less all the grease, just enough to coat the parts, including the felt and cover, so it fit just like the original. I think Fair Spares sells the same one about the same price, $35 and no machining of anything on the hub.

Dave,
I don't think the width of the double row bearing is a problem, unless it's way too wide and sticks out too far as it's the single row bearing that locates the wheel.
