This is going to be a slow road , wont get started for six months .

picked up the 3500 , a clean engine . Will mount Transverse .

Anyone got any Info on Drive Mechanism / Flywheel requirements .

:D

The generall ida is to throw a belt drive back to say a Laycock de normanville overdrive unit , for transmission .
My concern is I dont want the blankety flywheel up on the Crank . Also its gotta fit in , be narrow , and LIGHT .

Frame at this stage ? Looking at maybe Featherbed Wideline Copy in 1/8 or 3 mm wall tubeing .Unless I go
radical and do a Hossack / Britten Wish -Bone Mounted Girder layout .Though wouldnt look the same .

Idealy itd look Road Going Manx ish , with vrything tucked up in , and Tidy .
Obviously any Technical obsevations / suggestions as to a Two Bit ( Loot will be extremely limited) power transmission
that will give durability ( through simplicity , the ' good old ' addage ) will be grist for the Mill .

All Indirect Trans to reverse rotation could also be applicable , Need 3 to 5 speeds . Will be S/C spec.

Thanks in advance . And NO Laughing  Thanks !

C'mon, you have to admit it is worth a laugh

It would make an unusual creation in a featherbad type frame, as for looks, car engines just don't have any good looks, especially modern car engines. An aircooled engine like a VW boxer would look better IMOHO.

Its NOT for Looks . :)

Been thinking , And . . . Gotta can of WD 40 ,
Raining & the two , a 215 and a 269 are in the shed.
Id hoped to wash em , was going to lecve em outside
Been bucketing down,
WD 40 for MICE as ' residue' dwlling was 4.4 bellhouseing.

More of a Brough Superior Look perhaps ,
Maybe the Fuel injection manifold will win , as opposed carbs
The top front mount to suspension and REAR swing arm
are the primary load bearing aereas and need
to be both simple and light ( in relateive terms.

The Engines 318 Lb , With the Flywheel .
So presumeably its possible to beat a RIII for wight.
Though cooling might throw that out.

Seen or have a picture of Ea installed in Wideline ,
Will have to ' Find ' them . I hope .(in shed !) :D

Been intending to do a Coustom Commando frame layout since
a decade pevious to Seeing Those Pictures , or was it simultaeneous .

So if I go that way , Ive sorta got them both done.
And that frames a sight easier to make.
Only two bent tubes in the Main Frame .

Can size to suit and get its own ' LooK ' .
Motor will be canted forward a way to
get the Knees in a conventional Wheel Base.

IF it had secre lugs 14 in apart at rear , thered be somewhere to put the engine plates.
As it is , thereyll have to be bearing supports adjacent to belt.
Aircraft prop drive reductions are available for these engines .
Sometmes installed inverted draining through 6the Rocker Covers to a Firewall mounted sump blelow
Have Pics of ' Nortina ' Eventually a 1600 crossflow pushrod ford, presumably '711M' engine ,
Drive Fluid Flywheel , Transmission Gears = unnessesary One Speed ( previously FOUR .
Through Norton Box @ Tice Std. Speed & clutch . As Per R III . Tho this was built in the early 70s .
Nortina Carburation .= Turbo , Large S.U. ( previously 2 x Weber DCOE )

So He got it pretty Basic , and had a Fairly Fast Dominator , in the Era of the ' Japanese Invasion ' .
Was built in Southern Brisbane.
Theres some wide open spaces and straight roads in Austrailia in 1974 .
He had logitudeinal Wet Sump , cut and shut Oil Pan .

So its all pretty basic Except , it pays to think it through , If the Ideas to get the power down ,
get it to steer , go round tracks , or not ' give trouble ' .

Theres a way to go yet, 3 critical issues are front and rear mounts , and a decent Exhaust .

P.S. Ya gotta put a gurdle in above 8.000 then theyll pull 10.000 .Tho THIS ones staying STOCK .
XJR 220 was six cylinders of one, Though I dont Think the Turbo's will be nessesary .

If I was going to make a frame, I would put the engine in the back and have a feet forward laid back seating style, sort of a streamliner look with possibly a gyro to keep it upright or to keep it more simple, pop down wheels as soon as it stopped.

How about a Webley-Vickers 727?

YEAH! That's the ticket!

Pix of your engines would be nice, to get an inkling...

I have a flathead ford sitting in the barn that I'm going to make into a tractor looking trike some day.

If you belt-drove an auto box, how much flywheel would you need?

Or on another tack.... In theory, a faster spinning flywheel could be smaller, so how about a separate belt driven flywheel on a 1:3 crankshaft:flywheel ratio?

Still a bit damp . Rental shed is at the bottom of a 75 yard grass slope .
Last time it was wet , on the 5th attempt to get the car up , I leter roll back before hitting the brakes.
Ended up sideways rather than cutting loose down into the stream . . .
So , ive sprayed the mouse do dos and have got ' the itch ' so going to wash and change.

The Injuns , Threw a ruler on Rover , 16 in crank to top of Valve Covers,
20 in Block , along crank . Pity the Cranks ' a bit ' longer, but most of its the timing cover end ( R.H.S. ? )
20 in fore and aft , across the cylinder heads installed. as in Exhaust to exhaust with them front and rear .

Pictures or them in Norton frames were at Motorshows, probly ' the boys ' stirring , Having both in the shed they thought theyed raise a few eyebrows .
Beyond proveing ' theres enough room ' , were just mock ups . Leylands a bit wider across cylinders with 1/2 in longer stroke .

Dug out a picture of a Pre War ' Excellsior ' with solid alloy rear wheel .
The motors 1980s ( Rover) & Leyland P-76 4.4litre is 74 ( P-76 Commonly known as " P-38 " )
were developed from the Buick Oldsmobile Pontiac ' alloy ' 1960 odd ' Skylark ' engine ' . Maybe I will have to call it a Sky Lark :p

Not possesed of a camera , let alone a digital one , or even a Computor . Will tryand copy-paste a rally 3.500 engine to ' get the picture ' .

Oh brother Matt do we have conditions in common, ugh. At least not all of mine is that much slope, ugH.

Men have the urge to create and better not get in the way of it either. No requirements at all for a useful product, like real reproduction, so any thing goes functional or not, so have at it and keep your fingers clear.

Huh, i've learned my lesion, custom jobs are a delightful stress you can have your way with to make it work, the real challenge is trying to keep a factory version faithful.

Now steady on Chaps , Theres a Precedent Here . :D Between 1903 & 1924 , ROVER built over 10.000 MOTORCYCLES . :p

I'll bet they weren't big ole water cooled V8's. Did appreciate that the V'8 didn't break the AMC gear box in the custom, so will see if my custom dan't either.

Had hoped to get a picture of the Heffalump . :? Pile of debri in garage covered in blanket .

Spent 6 hours Monday shuttleing to the pressure washer at the Car Wash ,Engine into the back
of the station wagon , drive across the way , engine out , bung ports , hit with aerosol degreeser and wheel cleaner ,
blast of , load engine in , drive back to shed , unload and shuffle across ,

Twice ,

then a third load of debri , gearboxes , alternators and exhausts and the like . No snakes enhoused or Red Backs . :D

Was a ' cool ' winters day , and soaked through . But I suppose the first steps done .

Stored them nose up , The 3.5 oozed clean oil and turns freely . The 4.4 does nose up , but feels a little odd sitting flat.
So heads are coming of that for an inspection. Was always the plan for that engine as its 70.000 miles .Plugs are still
nice ' Bonniville ' Brown and Tan .
Id driven the Car it was in home last centurie. :p Oiled it then , I think , and again in 2005 , when I got out there .

The Rover 3500 ( 215 cu. in. Was suposed to be a fresh reco , Its internal state would bear this out . Some turkey
plastered the top with paint and fiddled , Possibly easier to fit new valve covers than restore .Plenty at the wreckers,
will have to price them.

Disapointingly the SDI there has intakes in a line ' across the frame ' which would snot top rails, so maybe cut of the SU part and fit a twin throat Weber downdraught , IDF or the like . Any one got a box of Lancia Carburators ? ?
The 16 in is to the bottom of the block, the crank is about 3 in up , which is hight saved .
All the pullies etc will have to be trashed , as theyed hit the Tarmac , whilst dragging ones ear around bends .

Hoped to hijack a cameraman , easier said than donre . Off to the ' big city ' to collect a Car Engine for the Car ! forked out for that Saturday ,
Hopefully itll hold out for another few weeks till its installed , Then ' the big move . THEN get something WORTHWHILE done . And some snot
left a Tyre mark in the Bonnet Last Night . All I need . backed into by a 4 x 4 . Bonnets trashed , 1987 Car . Finding a matching one will be
ANOTHER ' mission from God ' .

Feels like living on providance to often .Another Fine Day , till some idiot sticks there nose in it . ARGH .PROGRESS , we call THIS Progress ! ?
