I had a Dresda frame done in gunmetal years ago, it never looked right to me cos it looked almost black, but not quite.

But you’re talking orange mudguards… so obviously taste ain’t your thing !!

You never know Dellis, fixing it up you might have a bike you will enjoy riding.
 
Today I’ve been to Stroud to see Adrian at Rickman Motorcycles and have come home with a front mudguard, some tank/seat rubbers and a seat. While I was there I ordered a tank and seat base. Oh and I’ve gone with red but I’ve decided to go with an ally tank to avoid the ethanol issues associated with fibreglass, it I don’t like the look I’ll have it painted to match the seat base and mudguard. He had an ally tank that was being collected later this morning which I had a good look at, they are made in England and look like a quality item.

I’ve been giving the Rickman some more thought particularly the oil in frame. I like the idea of oil in frame but it needs to be cleaned out before use, I’m thinking paraffin would do a decent enough job any thoughts? I have also pondered fitting an oil tank, the reason behind that is the potential for rust to have developed inside the frame which would not be good flowing around the engine, again thoughts welcome.

Oh and I think a dark silver is coming out as favourite for frame colour having considered what Fast Eddie said about the colour on his Dresda. Obviously this is subject to numerous changes of mind until it’s actually gone to the powder coaters. Having it nickel plated was up there too until I spoke with Adrian Moss at Rickman Motorcycles who said I’d have little or no chance of getting a decent finish after previously being powder coated.

Flush it through with paraffin, shake it around a bit, and see what comes out. As it’s OIF there’s a good chance it’s in very good condition inside, it has been kept well oiled after all. Maybe even buy a cheapo camera jobbie.

The OIF is a great design, the frame tube surface area helps act as an oil cooler.

Getting the frame nickel plated would be a helluva job. Just getting the old frame polished in readiness would cost a fortune. Defo stick with paint or powder IMO.
 
Because of what it is, re-creating it needs to be done properly. I think Derek Rickman's bikes used to be green with grey frames. I have seen two Rickman Triumphs in Australia. One is still probably owned by Rod Tingate and used to have a 4-valve cylinder head. The other one is owned by Peter Smith and is a replica of Rod's bike which is the 1960s item. It's colour is orange.

If the bike is to be used for historic racing, I would not plate the frame. Either black or grey paint was normal for the period. If you talk to Rickman, they will tell you what colour most of their bikes used to be. Factory Triumphs used to be blue and Seeleys were aluminium withgrey painted frames. Not many bikes has nickel plated frames - Eglis were nickel plated also Niccoo Bakker from the 70s. I am not being silly, when I say that anything British or Italian which was raced in the 60s ot 70s, is really worth having.
 
Had my frame done in gunmetal grey & it looked fabulous & went with loads of colours ie tank & seat.
But now! Well your bike your choice.
Commando in yellow, Triumph frame in black red tank & seat. Rocket 3 gunmetal grey red tank silver seat lol one day I will finish that one!
