I've decided to try replace my collapsed layshaft bearing with the gearbox in situ using the workshop manual and this reference - http://www.doov.com/apps/nortoncompanio ... ng-upgrade
All has gone well getting into the box and sliding off both 1st gears and the 2nd gear main but I'm now stumped trying to slide off the 2nd gear lay. I've tried different gearings using the selector but no configurations seem to allow the gear off its shaft - any suggestions ?

Stu

The gear comes of with the selector when the rod that holds the selectors removed.

Hi Pete

no - I'll head back out to the shed and give that a go.

Will removing the spindle mean removing the selector fork / quadrant etc too ?
In "doovs" illustration that mechanism seems to remain intact through the work

thanks

The spindle will unscrew from the back of the case. Doing this will release the shift forks allowing the gears to come out. Read the article from Old Britts. It is a detailed description of dis-assembly. There is also another article on Fred's site that will describe the assembly.

Try and keep the shift forks matched to the gears they ride on. Also pay attention to the way the gears come off the shafts. I think 4th main can accidentally be put on backwards.

It's mainshaft 3rd (as mainshaft 4th is the sleeve gear).
Layshaft '4th' can also be fitted backwards.

Yep, just like Les said. It would be pretty hard to put the sleeve gear in backwards.
