I have the engine and front Iso removed from the frame. What is the best way to remove the gearbox from the engine plates? Can I remove it complete without removing the inner and outer covers or do I need to remove them before the gearbox will come out?

Removing Gearbox on Mk2

Thanks

With all the primary drive and clutch also all removed, you are supposed to be able to twist the gear box around so that it withdraws out the timing side.

The usual method with Commandos though is to undo and remove the swingarm, and pull the entire engine/transmission/plates as a unit out the clutch side, usually by laying the bike on its side in some manner.
hth.

Thanks Rohan, my question is more about can the gearbox be removed from the engine plates with the inner and outer covers still attached?

Thanks

Unfortunately I have experience taking out transmissions on a 72 750 and a couple of 73-74 850s. I got them all out with the plates and covers attached. Took a lot of wiggling and twisting but they came out.

take the top bolt out from the t/s and remember where the 1/8th thick washer goes. Take the nut/ washer from the bottom stud out. Slide the stud out. Tilt the bottom of the gearbox forward in cradle and there is enough room to remove it from the cradle on the timing side. it will come out as a complete unit. Piece of cake.

Thomas,

That was the piece of information I was after and you explained it beautifully. Most others were telling me how to remove the gearbox and engine plates from the frame as a unit which I was appreciative of, but was not what I was asking. Although it would not be the first time I have not explained myself properly. Just ask SWMBO. Although I think she speaks a different language to me, "something called Pommy Speak". Whereas I speak "Strine" and VERY well I must say.

Thanks,
Don

it will only come out if you remove the adjuster from the RH plate. Otherwise you cannot turn the box around to slide through the RH plate.

Thanks guys,

I did remove the gearbox adjuster when I removed the top gearbox bolt.

The gearbox came out easily enough. My first attempt failed as the drain bolt fouled the RH side plate. Once I removed the drain screw it came out fine. Another lesson learned from the Norton tutorial online course.

Thanks Guys,

Cheers
Don

That doesn't work for all of them. Mine doesn't like being called "dear" but she is dear over the years she has cost me a fortune an still does :D
