I removed the gearbox outer cover today and found a horrible greyish sludge, almost a gel, instead of the lovely purple shockproof oil I was expecting.
Unless I have a Tokoloshe (see https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tikoloshe if you are not a Southern African native!), something seems to have reacted with the oil.
I’ve asked Redline, but no reply yet so I was wondering if anyone here had seen this?

Regarding the current thread on use of gloves or not, this is a definite reason for doing so:-)

I have a gallon jug of their lightweight shockproof oil. I know that if left to sit awhile it will separate into a thick gray mass and a blue lighter oil. I have to shake it up before use. Your bike may need to just be run so it mixes together. Then look at it.

Looks similar to...
...on my screen, not exactly purple.

That separated outer cavity may conspire to keep that lube separated, as mentioned above.

Thanks. Looking through the net earlier I found a couple of references to this, but half suggested water as being the cause.

There was no evidence of water in the slime, nor (as far as I could see) any metal shards. The gears look perfect (I changed the originals for a low mileage set from a MKIII because of spalling on the teeth faces), which is as expected since I’ve not done many km on the bike, but still very good to see

I’ve enough Redline for another 2 oil changes so I’ll probably carry on with it, but I’m surprised that there’s no mention of this separation on the bottle or the website.
I’m wondering if I shook the bottle before filling last time to mix the thin and thick goop?
It was impossible to drain the gearbox, removing the drain bolt resulted in nothing at all, hence the quick gearbox strip

I used to use Redline Shockproof.

But Comnoz wrote about how it didn’t seem to have the ‘searching’ qualities to get into all the bushings correctly.

And I then learnt that TTI insist it must NOT be used in their boxes.

And then I had a bike with a stiff gearchange which was cured by swapping the Redline for Bel Ray.

And then I tried Bel Ray in other bikes and noticed an improved gearchange.

I don’t use Shockproof anymore.

I bought a few Nortons over the years that had a grey sludgy oil in the gearbox. It looked like an emulsion, as there was usually evidence of water in the box. No idea how it got there. Bikes left out in the rain and water ran down the clutch cable? Too keen cleaning using too much water?

I use a 50:50 mix of these:
No evidence of gel/separation and comes out very clean looking.
All my shifts are smooth and clean (I'm an excellent rider you know!!)
A riding friend changed to this and notice a distinct improvement - especially finding neutral on his Mk3.
