Rear lamp lens...has no reflector??

The aluminium reflectors are to reflect the light from the bulb outwards to make the rear light brighter.

The reflector being discussed hear is the build in reflector moulded into the plastic to reflect red light of another light is directed at the lens from the rear.

Does anyone know the intended value of the reflector, in day light you don’t need it, and at night you’ve got you’re lights on. Is it designed for when its parked at the roadside ?

The reflector is there for when parked at the roadside at night, but the main reason is for when the vehicle is being driven and the bulb blows
I checked my lens last night and it doesn't have reflective properties...so will be ordering a better quality one from AN or RGM..... That'll teach me from buying one off that certain auction site:mad::mad:

If you can be bothered, you should still send it back and / or demand a refund as the part is legally unfit for purpose.

The L917 lens on my Norton has a reflector in it. Just a rather stiff piece of aluminum foil forced into place by the curvature and a dab of glue.
The foil came loose once and rubbed on the wires causing a short. Took me a while to find that one.

Some Lucas L917s have the aluminium sheet while others do not even straight out of the Lucas box.

Only one of the lenses below has it:
Rear lamp lens...has no reflector??

= The one on the right. Edit: That particular lens also has two black foam-rubber pads which rest against the bulb reflector.

The aluminium sheet is glued in. It's interesting to note that the genuine Lucas L917s without the aluminium sheet (centre) have a tinted flat plastic sheet glued(?) in instead.
The pattern item (on left) the actual reflector is glued (or heat-welded?) in.

Edit: There were two versions of L917 lens, one with red side reflectors (glued), one without.

Your not wrong Eddie, and with all this time on my hands I will be sending it back

When there’s no foil, just the prisms in the lens, should we call it a refractor, rather than a reflector?

I'm just reflecting that buying what looks like a good deal on flee bay isn't always the case...

I have one on the shelf without side reflectors. What's the story behind those?

I think red side reflectors were not legal in all countries.
The '1973'/Mk2/2A/Mk3 Commando parts books list two variations of L917 tail lamp assembly and lens.

"54584930 Lens".
"54585314 Lens For Italy and Germany" which I assume to be the lens without side reflectors unless anyone knows differently?

The L917 also fitted to Triumphs.

I just purchased a new, current production Lucas brand L917 tail light lens on eBay. I am happy to say that the quality looks very good. The red plastic is a nice deep red color and the rear reflector plastic is twice as thick as the cheap aftermarket stuff. It has all of the same markings as the old L917 lens except it does not have the EII markings. This new lens however has a couple of additional markings. On the right hand side of the lens it has a wavy sign followed by K 12482 and the left hand side of the lens DGM 13210 LPX ARLT.

A couple of other differences between the old Lucas and the new Lucas lens is that the new Lucas lens does not have the aluminum reflective sheet metal. Also it does not come with the mounting screws and the rubber sealing washers so you would have to reuse your old ones. The clear window on the bottom for the license plate light has a patch of diffuser ridges in it while the old original lenses do not.

One thing is for sure, this lens is far superior to the other after market junk that is out there and I feel that they are well worth the price.

After having two tail lights break from accidental knocks on my rider bike, it just makes no sense to pay for a true Lucas brand when there's very little noticeable difference to the pattern types.

“Genuine” Lucas L917 & L679 “beehive” lenses are available with all the correct markings..

that should knock the bottom out of the exorbitant prices I have seen genuine second hand L679 lenses and lamps going for.
