rear brake shoes to big

I purchased rear brake shoes from andover for my 69 Commando S restoration. They were draging when I mocked it up so I gave a little grind to the steel wear pads to try and reduce the rubbing and made it better, just slight rub but there is hardly any free play of the actuation lever. then when I tried putting the new brake cable on it, it will not reach by about 2 inches. New cable is the same length as the old one. Now do I have to grind the shoe friction material down (wich would be ridiculus) to get the actuation lever to move fwd enough to connect the cable. Do you mean the slippers as they shouldn't be fitted with the latest AN shoes.

I investigated and found the new brake shoes have a slipper pad incorporated on the shoe back to square one
