Racing again (at last)

Hi Ralph
I am now, sort of no longer shielding! As the government said shielding is over. I am back to work, but not! Due to covid, health & safety & my health. It does mean I am no longer trapped in the house. So I can get about lol & get things done. Eye test being first on the list.
Pembreys a fabulous track so I will move towards entering.

I can say that the CRMC are taking the Covid thing seriously and are doing a good job on their side of things, in the paddock it is up to individuals to a certain extent but the tannoy give regular reminders about distancing and some teams have tape barriers round them, so you should be safe at Pembrey if you decide to go, be nice to have another Norton there.

I am just absolutely stoked to see that somewhere in the world there are people who are still road-racing motorcycles. The virus really shits me, it seems to be never-ending. You never know how much you really need something until you cannot have it.
Get your bike ready and fueled up. I know this is against your nature, but a 5-10 mile sprint on some public roads might put the smile back on your face. No need to go fast, just ride.

I don't even start my bike at home because I know if I start it, I will ride it. The cop who used to live across the road has died, but the divvy-van still visits the cop who lives just around the corner from my house. First gear on the Seeley can reach about 70 MPH. They would jail me.
All I can do is wait, but in the mean time, I will be improving my bike. When the bullshit has gone, I want to do some on-board video. I think getting back to racing might be too hard - the rules have changed a lot. And besides, my helper has died. I can do a track day on my own, but a race meeting is different. I could do it on my own when I was young, but not now.

I tell all the young riders who see my bike and want to ask about it that the secret of riding is to be able to "look good while going slow,... and you'll live long enough to get old..."

Of course, if you're racing on a track that's another thing altogether...

What you are saying has merit. Even just once around the block would be good. But it would be just my luck to have them come around the corner while I am doing it. I got booked the other day when I was right out the back of buggery. There is nowhere that is out of sight. But you have got me thinking. I don't know what is needed to get club registration. Old motorcycles did not have much clutter back in the old days. If I could get it reasonably legit, I'd ride it. If I got sprung doing it illegally, it would cost me an arm and a leg.
The trick might be to buy a crap bike which is registered and swap the plates onto the Seeley.

The bullshit might last a while, and none of us are getting any younger. One of our members commented recently that Covid has stolen a year from us, a year that can't be recovered. Your heart is aching to ride your Norton, and I can feel that from here.

My Seeley Mk4 750 is registered for the road. Daytime only. Shit horn rear brake light. Old bike lol

Chris, I have an original Mk4 with a dating letter from Colin. Interested to know if your frame came with a V5 or whether you went through the process with DVLA. If you did I don’t need a blow by blow account, just interested to see if it is possible.

Of couse it's possible, there are one or two Manxs, G50 etc. There are some hoops to overcome, but still possible.

Hi Steve's
Dating certificate,a visit to the local dvla office for the once over & it was done. They did all the paperwork.
Lots of things are not the same but the basic rules are still the same.
With my MK3 Seeley they were so helpful it was untrue. Even changed the number plate & date to original build date so that I had historic tax i.e. none! (I had an import certificate from the donar bike 1984)

In Australia, for registration of most unusual vehicles we need an engineer's certificate, and the design rules apply. I think buying another road bike would be a much better option, but these days the reasons we can drive to other places are limited. I just have to face the fact that I just have to live with the lockdown. But it does not get any easier. A while back, I started fixing the minor problem I have with the Seeley. Covid 19 cannot last forever.

Lockdown and COVID has nothing to do with you not riding your bike. You've been talking bollocks about it for at least ten years. How many times have you actually raced it? I mean actually ridden it on a race track in a proper race, not laps around your keyboard?

At least you haven't mentioned drum brakes or pudding bowl helmets this week..........but there's still time

Al, what would qualify as reason to travel where you are? I don't follow the news so I didn't realise it was that bad in Australia.

My mate does engineers certificates, he is in Sydney where are you? Maybe he could help.

You guys can laugh about drum brakes, but I cannot. My excuse for using them is I did not know any better. What is yours' ?
When I think of the racing I did between 1965 and 1975, I just feel sick. I should be dead. I was only seriously injured once, but that time I went very close.
