Holed exhaust pipe caused by the pipe either vibrating against or an impact with the [Edit:] side stand pivot nut and bolt?

Muffler where mounting stud broke off, old deaf guy ignored the racket for 200 miles.

Quiz: guess what happened on the way home...

I never had a side stand on the bike for thirty years until the restoration. It had one in the spares box that was severely ovaled in its mounting hole, so I never put it on.

I never noticed on the old pipes I used to run in the motor that it had developed a small divot. But the long trip and I think all of the vibes from the muffler break on that side exacerbated things to the disastrous conclusion for the new Les Harris pipe.

The side stand will go back in the spares box for a while, I guess, and the old one will fo back on. Until I figure out a new exhaust plan.

So where did the fibrous material around the hole, which looks like an implosion, come from?

yeah the fuzz on the hole had me bamboozled... :)

is this a <74 exhaust or 75? it looks like a short bolt and a thinner nut as originally provided by the factory may be justified...

74. Bolt is proper thin head 2 1/4 long, but nut is standard. I will have to dig thru my nut bucket and see if a thin one is in there and cut off some of the bolt.

the thinhead bolt was to clear the spring,i cut my bolt off, 1 thread above the nut, and used a jambnut, so no lockwasher required

Well, even using a a thin jamb nut would put it as high as the standard nut - and as you can see from the pic the nut did as much damage as the bolt end. Not sure even a thin nut, bolt cut down to 1 thread above that and using locktite will work with this.

When I first converted my 850 to the Featherbed in the early 80s I never had a side stand or centre stand and it was like that for over 30 years, there is always a fence, post or building to lean the bike on, I have even used my helmet lol, the less things to scrape when leaning into tight corners the better, I now have a clamp on side stand but only use it when I really need to so use to leaning on something, old habits are hard to get rid of lol, but about 6 weeks ago the foot on the side stand broke off and being cast iron will have to use a lot of heat to braze it back on and my oxy set is near empty, might be cheaper to buy a new side stand than to get the bottles refilled for the amount I use the oxy set.
