Pushrod shortening

I need to shorten some pushrods. Steel ends pressed on ally shafts. What is the best way
to proceed for one who has limited tooling?

The simple answer is - if you have never had to file a block of metal perfectly square then don’t try to shorten them. Find someone else who can do it or practice practice practice until perfect.

^^^^ Did the square block test as an apprentice piece quite some decades ago ..... ( actually my square had to be a cube )

Cut a PRECISE 2" cube from a round billet of steel using only a hacksaw, a file, a flat scraper and a engineers square.

I recall the " boss " placing my finished metal " cube " onto a surface plate ( not a good sign ) and then using slip gauges and a DTI to check all the dimensions ........ b-stard ... Lol !

Took me a WEEK to get it right !!!! Never want to relive that again

These are the tools I made to remove Commando pushrod ends some years back. Pretty crude, but easy to make and worked quite well.



In use.



I shortened the pushrods in a lathe, but they can also be done by hand with saw and file, or even just a belt or disk grinder.

Ever done this with JSM pushrods? If so, what did you use to remove the ends and reattach them?
