Is the primary chain in a Norton N15cs the same as the primary set up in an Atlas?

Question is a bit funky, the first part is a chain & then 'same as the primary set up in an Atlas?'

If the question is are the chains the same? no

750 Atlas, 650SS, G/N15CS, P11 (all versions) had a 21T engine sprocket as standard fitting.
G15Mk2 and G15CSR had a 22T engine sprocket as standard fitting.
Chain size is 1/2 x 0.305", length 76 and 68 link respectively. Despite the 4.55% lower gear ratio, the G15Mk2 & CSR still used a 68 link chain.

Chain length stated in the 1966-76 Workshop manual is erroneous.

Sorry. I want to put a belt drive in my 1967 N15, but can only find one for an Atlas on eBay. That’s why I want to see if they’re the same. Thanks

If you give a good Belt and bearing company the center to center and the number of teeth on each sheave they can tell you the belt you need. I know a supplier that can match belts to two teeth count. Commando's use a 36 tooth 8mm as an engine sheave.

"Having just talked with a Gentleman in the USA who has been manufacturing dry running belt drive systems for British motor cycles since the 1970s I am informed that he has sold a few P11 systems over the years. The systems employ a dry running belt of 20mm width and a 4 friction plate diaphragm spring clutch which IF correctly set up with the correct diaphragm spring will give a very easily operated with no more than two fingers all day long clutch lever action....along with no clutch slip or drag problems."

Can you send me his information? Thank

I think this is gonna take more than just measuring centers. i'm not clear on what all is involved & so far the threads only talk about 'a few' out there.

I'm sorry but if you don't know the answer why would you comment ?
The bloke is clearly looking for specific advice

Haven't read any of the above links, but as a former P11 owner that shared the alloy Matchless primary case I seem to recall the belts were usually wider than the OE chain, which meant the outer chaincase needed a spacer fabricating...
This in turn pushed the alternator stator further out, given that they're mounted in the outer case unlike the Atlas set up, so another thing to consider, perhaps? (May even interfere with the footrest hardware?)..
Of course if current options are different, ignore the above :)

Can a Atlas belt drive kit be used in a 1967 N15 ?

That is the query.

Just to add to what others have already said: A belt drive clutch in a N15 has been done, but there is nothing particularly straight forward about it. N15 and P11 use a similar primary arrangement. Norvil sells a kit for the N15, and claims it bolts right on, but I seriously doubt the stock primary cover would ever go back on, and they use a very skinny belt. Anywho, Ludwig did a nice belt drive on a N15(?) using a cut up Commando primary. The amount of work and skill required was above my paygrade. Ron L put one on a P11, but as mentioned required a spacer and other fun modifications.

I have not done it, but it doesn't take a rocket scientist to know it's not going to be a bolt on and go installation on a N15 like it is for those lucky Commando owners. It is your time though, so follow your dreams wherever they may take you. Do a few searches here and on the web to see what it takes.

I looked into a belt drive clutch for my P11, but the amount of work was definitely not worth it to me with a bike that was all together and working fine? If it would have been in pieces and the cases split, I might have tried something. However, my old AMC clutch works. I also have a home garage made clutch rod seal which prevents gearbox fluid contamination. My old clutch does not drag or slip anymore. The 4-finger man pull at the lever has never bothered me. It may someday, but I would imagine by then I won't be able to kick start it, or even remember it's in the garage.

If you don't mind my asking, what problems are you trying to solve other than get away from an old antique wet clutch?

That sounds like QPD, I was lucky enough to find a NOS QPD belt drive kit for my 1957 TR6A and indeed it has a Norton diaphragm pressure plate.
The original primary in that case was all but junk including the gearbox output shaft taper and key so the incentive to fit a belt drive had advantages. (along with TR6SC gear clusters from Mach IV motors)

You could probably modify near anything to fit if you have the tooling to do so maybe even a Atlas belt drive into a N15CS if the determination is there to do so.
