I have two side covers that were powder coated. Lot of orange peel. Can they be rubbed out like paint and if so any advise on
doing it?

you would have to sand them down , with a block until you were at about 2000 grit . then polish. some pc is soft and will not gloss out , But powder coat does makes a good primer!

Powder coat is great for garden furniture! Otherwise, it's a solution for which there was no problem. ;)

IMO if you want to remove p_c the best way is time consuming and rather messy, use a steel rotary brush in a power drill.

Well, you say that, but in my experience it peels off of garden furniture ...!

But that might be due to the dogs pissing on it.

There you go Onder... soak yer side panels in dog piss...

Ill speak to my dog about this....

Im not looking to remove it rather just rub it out and use it. Next winter for anything further.

I have only ever used 2 powder coaters, both used powder coat that can be sanded and T cut. But just like paint there are many types of powder coat.

Nothing to do with dogs! The garden furniture is allowed to rust, before it is powered coated, the same can happen on bike parts, hence it is slowly rusting under the coat and cannot get a grip onto clean metal, so down the line, it can be effectively peeled off. I've had a Jap frame and 2 alloy wheels done over 25 years ago, both were shot blasted to allow a good surface for the coating. Buy cheap garden furniture, it will have been made by monkeys, you get what you pay for.

And not so cheap furniture powder coated, unless you live by the sea you have no idea how fast it gets penetrated!

If my stuff had been cheap I’d have took it on the chin. But it bloody wasn’t!

It wasn’t steel either, it was aluminium.

There’s no doubt that powder coating can be good. If it’s applied really well and the surface is prepared really well.

The trouble is, finding someone whom you can trust to do the above!

If you know such a coater then good for you. But if you don’t, it’s pot luck.

Powder coating is used extensively in industry, NOT because it’s a superior product, but because it’s cheap and quick.

As stated before, the secret is to sand blast it to give it a good "key" it will not stay on smooth metal for long. My 2 wheels have been thro many winters, with all that can throw up at it, coating is still there.

A lot of powder coating is down to environmental bothers at the application shop.

To some extent true, my alloy wheels had to be sent back as they had not been completely covered, as alloy is a very poor magnetic for the coat to cover completely, the baking process is also crucial.

I had most of my parts powder coated. The guy that did mine did a lot of work for the DOD and he used a phosphate dip before the coat. He said it removes the issue of rust. It's been maybe 12 years now and it still looks fine to me. I did it because the first time I repainted the frame it was with enamel spray can. It didn't last long what with all the oil and gas leaking around. I've been happy with mine, although it has gotten a bit worn in places. The only things I had to work on getting the coating off was the area around the rear axle/brake plates/swing arm that I forgot to mask. It didn't take me long to fix it, but it is hard to get off. I think I pretty much scraped it with a utility knife. I'm not complaining, but it's not for everyone.

I even did the trees in 'chrome' powder, I think it looks great, but not like chrome at all which is fine with me.
