My stock MK3 starts great with the biggest Odyssey battery I could fit in the stock box and a 3 phase alternator. The starter and cables are stock -along with the original sprag.
 
A friend with a III changed only the batt cables to heavier gauge and the OEM starter reliably starts the bike with no issues...though it doesn't spin it at 100MPH (seemingly) like my Alton E-start does (and I assume the CNW E-start does as well.
 
Like many, I converted my MKIII to a 4 brush set up and a bit heavier cables. It has always started great with the std battery. Still on the original sprag ,etc., after over 60K miles.

That's with open peashooters.
With black caps and the balance tube open (stock MK3 or Mk2A exhaust) the bike is pathetically slow, I wouldn't bother owning it if that was all it had.
With the open peashooters it's a decently snappy machine. Closing off the balance tube made it just a bit faster. Couldn't feel it but it could be measured on every pull.

Well I like my Bean Cans, and they are the real deal not repos, as the repos are not built the same. I will have my quiet MK3 at the rally next month and put it against any normal Mk3 Interstate with any other loud exhaust. Remember race bikes need different setups than street bikes .

My ears have suffered from loud pipes, etc. over the years and it's now become a problem for me as a musician. The pea shooters on my commando aren't too noisy and I've run old-stock bean-cans in years past but I can't remember how much they hurt performance. Now I'm looking for a quiet muffler for my G80cs Matchless. I'm not sure there is such a thing.

Jimbo, Where did you get the Lester mags? I had them on an R90S once and liked them; should have kept the bike. Is that a Norman Hyde fork brace and are they still available somewhere?

even original Bean Cans can be different. I have a good set now( nice and quiet ,the bike still runs strong), but they are becoming very hard to find without rattles and rust. The wheels are two 19" lesters fronts made for a Honda with many hours of machining to fit. Hyde fork brace is a bitch to fit, but I think once setup is a good thing with a single sided powerful brake.
 
I have original bean cans on a MKIIA and was surprised how well the bike runs. My MKIII never had bean cans, they were taken off when delivered new and replaced by peashooters. So this was my first experience with them.
 
I am sorting out a Mk III that I put on the road this Spring. I have a set of aluminum premiers on order but in the meantime I'm trying to sort out the original carbs. This morning I will clean them in a friends ultrasonic cleaner as I suspect the pilot jets are blocked. T he airbox still had the rubber inserts and when I removed them the bike went extremely lean though I noticed a definite increase in performance. the needles were in the lowest setting and now are set in the highest (clip in the lowest groove) and it's still marginally lean. 220 main jets so I will see if I have bigger mains. I originally thought the mufflers were original black caps but upon inspection they turned out to be Dunstalls with black caps installed? It is quiet with a deep tone. No idea if a PO modified them as I've never seen this style before. On another note the right side cover that I've owned for years and is freshly painted doesn't fit as the black airbox interferes. I checked Torontonian's bike and see that I will have to carefully remove quite a bit of material!!

Question? How could the airbox affect the fit of the right hand side cover? It's over the oil tank.
