I got a package from Ella today. I thought I'd post these pics. I thought it was cool.

This the 12 amp/hour agm I replaced.

This is the Shorai 9 amp/hour. You'd swear nothing was in the box.

It's a 74 850 two wire 130 watt alternator. Podtronic and Trispark. It runs over 3000 rpm at 13.4 or 13.5 volts and drops to 13 or 13.1 at idle with bright light. turn signal and brake on. Podtronic and battery are cool. I hooked a harborfreight volt meter to the battery tender quick connect and straped it to my tank. I'll monitor it for awhile until I trust it but so far it so good.

This thing is tiny.

Ya believe it or not the 14 a/h one can be put in that same small case if you ask them to or bigger if you want it to fit a orig battery hold down. They also weigh about as much as a postage stamp!! I just bought a normal 14 a/h battery & wish I new about these first.

I think you need 14ah if you use electric start.

Yes, I don't care what kind of battery you like, heavy weight, lightweight or somewhere in between, AH and CCA tend to go hand and hand. Simply put, 9ah 135cca lithium is somewhat equal to a 9ah 135cca lead acid. Lighter? Yes. Perform like a 14ah 210 cca battery? Hell no.

Yes, there are other benefits, but cost is the killer for an adequate spec unit.

"AH'" may not be you concern but cca is and you can't have one with out the other.

Been using that battery for over a year in my '75 Mk III (electric start not installed). Still works a treat.

Very low self discharge. Went on a 7 month military deployment and the thing was practically fully charged!

Have mine mounted underneath my seat hump. Prior to that was using a gel battery that was mounted on rubber atop the transmission cradle. Heat and vibration would kill that battery in a short period of time.

Cheers,

9ah is fine for kick start.

I think Hobot uses a 2ah or a 4ah on one of his. Lights have to be off though to start it with those.

According to this guy I should be alright with my 130 watt stator....... :D

The battery acts as the middle man between the charging system (stator and reg/rec) and the demand (lights, starter, EI unit and so on). To minimize an under and over charging situation, to prolong the battery life and to ease the duties of the reg/rec unit, a battery should come close to and slightly lower in capacity (AH) in relation to the stator output.

An example would be, a 180 watt stator divided by 12v = 15amps. A 14ah battery would be perfect.
Running a 16ah to 18ah or higher may cause the stator to run efficiently (get hot) where as a 12ah will cause the reg/rec unit to over work (get hot). In either case there is an imbalance within the system.

The End:

I am keeping the voltmeter on it and we'll see. I seems ok so far. I notice less than .1 volt drop when I turn on the headlight and no drop at all for the brights. I may play aroung and measure the amp draw. Old brits has a good video about it.

130w/12v = 10.83 Those numbers seem real good for a 9ah Lithium battery. Your system should profide all you need with little effort.

I'm running a 9AH battery with original single phase, zener, rectifier. Halogen headlight illuminated at all times for safety. Plenty of battery.

Thanks for the feedback. I am going to run like this for awhile. I'll have to figure out what to do with the extra space. There is room in there for my lunch box now....

For the next guy it would be nice to paint the end of the hot wire black on the new fuseholder or label it somehow.

Funny you said that. I just pointed that out to the guy that put that fuse in for me the other day. Apparently it is orange and not red so he thought it was good enough. I am colorblind for one thing,.... but I am going to heatshrink it black in the near future. I agree with you. Even though it will be one of my sons who inherits it.
