Sorting out my 72 rebuild. After sitting overnight after a ride there is a puddle under the drive chain in front of the rear wheel sprocket. It looks and smells like gear lube. I'm trying to chase down the source. Seal on the output shaft on the gear box? Another thought is the swing arm bushings as I'm using 140 weight lube in them. The chain oiler from the tank is blanked off. Any suggestions? I really don't want to have to pull the gearbox yet.

As with ANY oil leak... cleaning is the key. Clean thoroughly around your swing arm pivots. Then inspect later. Spray brake cleaner and clean (as best you can) around the sprocket snout. You DID use sealant on the sprocket's spline, threads, sleeve edges, didn't you? Does it do it on the centerstand as well? Does the transmission level go down?

Further to what Concurs has suggested, you could try collecting some in a clean white container for closer analysis, & park the machine leaning to the right [as well as side & centre stands] of vertical to see if the lube tracks or not..

Looks like I have narrowed down the sources. First is a small amount of seepage from the kick-starter and shifter shafts on the gear box. Appears fairly minor and the level seems to be holding okay. Most of it appears to be coming from the chain oiler. I have tried to blank this off with a piece of hose with a bolt stuck in the end of it and hose clamps.
I could put the original oiler back on which I believe has a valve to limit flow or I could try putting some rvt sealer on the bolt and tightening the clamps more.
So far, 250 miles into the break in the engine is staying oil tite. Sparing applications of Hondabond on mating surfaces and I'm using Mikes XS breather valve.

I took the necked down aluminum peice of the chain oiler that holds the felt, cleaned it out well, filled it with black RTV. Looks as new, NO drips, totally reversible. JFWIW
