Old vs new

This repeats itself a lot. I had a Harris Bonnie in the late 80s and, guess what, many old boys said it wasn’t a proper Triumph.

Go back to the 60s old boys said Norton’s built post factory move weren’t ‘proper’.

It really gets to the point where defining whatever ‘proper’ is becomes pretty tough. And pointless.

Thats the way I see it especially as Norton is now once again made in the UK. That may not make them any more genuine a brand than Triumph but a more authentic british brand in my view. No nastiness from me, I would love an old Norton sometime if I ever get the time to tinker a bit more. I still need to get my BSA Bantam going, see that is due to launch again from India.

Are they really made in the UK? A sales guy at the bike shop nearest to me told me that he was working at a shop in Florida last year and the only two 961's they had on the showroom floor were built in India. Maybe he was wrong. I don't know. He also told me that "Trevor" Hayden was killed riding his bicycle in Texas.

Hand assembled with UK content 83% I believe and hope they can maintain at least this, especially with the deal with China and India. From what I have read, the UK content is important to Stuart Garner

Dead wrong. Must have confused them with the Enfields.

This was probably the result of some confusion that was generated by one of Garner’s last interviews.
He was asked questions by the press about the licensing of the new 650 designs by the Chinese.
He kind of indicated that some 961’s would be delivered to China partially assembled.
Those machines would receive final assembly in Asia, but for sale in Asia only, not for export to the US or Europe.
I’m not an international manufacturing expert, but this was discussed on the forum some time ago.

Yeah I had a gut feeling he was wrong. Thank you all for your responses to the matter.

Yup my dingy flipped over in the English Channel after Jez ate the pretty girl's dog.

Yeah I ran across the Marty Bergen story accidentally. It sounds like he was a real character. Definitely more interesting than Pete Rose.
