anyone know the replacement numbers for oil filters...I wanted to save a few pennies and head over to the local auto parts shop, but for the life of me I can't remember which car oil filters we can use on out 850's.
thanks,

See "Oil Fliter Forgiveness"....

There is a current thread on this topic under the name above on Britbike.com, in the Norton section. It lists about 5-6 alternate part numbers.

I could not find one locally as I am from a small town. I went to a local Harley aftermarket shop, the same filter will also work on a Sportster, it is a Per-Form, Part No. HD-3, FWIW.

Ducati filters also fit, but definitely won't save you any money!

alternative filters

Greetings,
The noc.co.uk site had quite a few listed, one of which was a Harley number for some older model 1340cc bikes. I used that number to find a K&N brand filter #K&N 172C, which is chrome and has a handy 17mm nut welded to the top for easy install/removal. However, if you change filters often and want to get away with it cheaply, purchase the filter adaptor kit from Colorado Norton Works, $15.95 buys, filter, adaptor, and list of readily available filters which you will then be able to use.

Or, if you just want to buy the adapter itself, along with an included list of cheap readily available filters, go here:

Good service, reasonable and fast shipping.

I assume this K&N filter you mention will fit right onto a MKIII?

If your filter is the sort that fits behind the gearbox on the cradle, it is the same as a Citroen 2cv, assuming you have those heaps on your side of the pond!

With the adaptor mentioned below by wrench (9 bucks), I use WIX filter number 51348. You can easily cross reference this to another brand if you prefer something else. These are all going to be considerably cheaper and easier to find than the original Citroen filter.

I like the idea of the K&N replacement....but not so hot on the Chrome.
BTW.....those Citroen 2CV filters are a dime a dozen.........(in France).
