Oh my, this happened

Sounds like while you're at it you might as well order those reinforced Molnar cases. . .
🤣Dreams... Might as well build a 1000 while I'm at it. I did price doing it, and it would be just this side of nuts. I like his cases, but it would be a project full of new things to make fit into the P11 frame. My brain is starting to malfunction thinking about it. Now that I have said all that, it'll probably blow up right after I get it running and try the high speed nonsense and I'll need new cases. Might end up a shoulda coulda moment.

I don't really want to put a lot more money into the old thing anymore. I may get some new 73mm higher CR pistons. That is about it. I'm going back to my SS cam and flat lifters. Budget rebuild.

SO, @gpzkat how far are you from southern Wisconsin? I have a few derelict bikes that I want to move on as I reduce what my next of kin have to deal with.

A long way - the West Coast. I do have some painting keeping me busy, learning the ropes with decals and clear coating some vintage Suzuki stuff.

You might need a sleeping bag to go with that pop corn. It's gonna be a while before anything interesting takes place. I'm moving at a snails pace. Some odd things have surfaced that could have been the source of the unusual noise near the bottom end. Still have not gotten the bottom end cases out of the frame to see if the rod big end bearings need replacing. Getting close, but not there yet. Staring at it and trying to invent workarounds to getting parts out of the frame that were never meant to be there in the first place doesn't make it happen. Specials argh !!

When I was up at Molnars place a little while ago (which is incredibly impressive BTW) there was a shelf with rows of freshly finished crank cases.

They looked fabulous !

Jus’ sayin’ !!

Molnar's cases would solve several issues, but I'd probably have to change my primary cover to one of the racey type. I am not sure I could easily bolt Molnar's cases in the P11 frame either. I'd need a featherbed frame and another garage. I'm out of work space unless I kick the wife's car out of the garage. That might not go over too well. I'm not saying I won't. I need to think on it some more.

Good news is the crank and rod big end shells are fine, but I'll replace the shells just because the crank is out.

Bad news is my pistons must have come very close to seizing up when the oil pressure at the rocker spindles went to zero at 70mph. I have to replace the pistons. The bore is iffy, but I don't want my barrels in machinist jail, so I'll work over the minor scuffing front and rear of the bore. I know terrible idea, but the engine never smoked at all, so it will probably be ok, but a hair loose after I hand hone it.

All the bronze in the oil was from the lifter blocks. I sort of knew that when I took off the timing cover and looked at the rubberized timing chain adjuster. It was trashed due to me not adjusting the chain correctly. Chain was too tight. The intermediate gear was hitting the adjuster plates as well, and was most likely the cause of the ugly noise down low in the cases. Anywho, I could have not split the cases, but wanted to look anyway.

More later

I am using JSM high CR Wiseco pistons for Carrillo long rods and my SS cam with flat lifters. Probably looking at a hair over 9:5:1 CR. No base gasket and a .032" copper head gasket if the valves don't bang on the pistons. Otherwise a .040mm copper head gasket. The copper head gaskets are JSM, and I strongly suggest to anyone using the JSM copper head gaskets to make sure you have a minimum of .010" clearance around the cylinder bore and all the head bolt holes are lined up like they should be. Do whatever it takes to make that happen. First time I use one the head gasket moved forward during the head install and the pistons were hitting the edge of the gasket at the rear of the bores. I could blame it on some fastening hardware I was using, but in the end it's always my fault when something fails to work like it should.

My guess is the SS cam will be some kind of fun with all the light weight parts I am using inside the engine. Last time I used the SS cam all the reciprocating and rotating parts inside the engine were a lot heavier. I might be a little over geared though. Oh well, I can work with it whatever it turns out to be. Same as all the rest of you addicts. ;)

I'd say 120 would be easily possible with your setup
I can't see anything on your build that's lacking
Fingers crossed that the damage isn't too bad
Maybe even a clean up and new shells 👍
Got lucky on the crank... It still looks brand new.

After reading that Cycle World article Matt Spencer posted about the Production 750 Formula bike tests, I should be able to do 130mph with my engine. I'm not sure my nads are large enough to do it on a P11 frame though.

Definitely looking forward to running it again with the SS cam, more compression, and the over carburetion. Probably get a chance before end of August if all goes well.
