Re: Norvil Motorcycle and shipping quotes: overcharged quote

It is not the postage it seems but the website currency readout.
My mistake entirely, forgot to adjust the currency conversions for several months (we have to do this by hand in our system, and I plain forgot!)

As for making money on postage, we don't- we make a small loss on our "carriage recharges" every month.

I should have clicked to this on the order earlier in the year but of course total cost is not known until the CC payment is processed,I will just work in GBP from now on.
I hope Phil is enjoying his time off ? and have to say his customer service is exemplary, every time I have dealt with him its almost like you are the only customer (phone or email) :D

Re: Norvil Motorcycle and shipping quotes: overcharged quote

I went and checked the invoice from Norvil (AN do not do a cam gear spindle support plate)
I was charged £41.50 for a box that might have weighed up to 3 kg.
That I remember, support plate / clutch locking tool / seal installation tool / spindle slide hammer ??
Jan at Norvil was very good to deal with (email) so have no complaints, going by the shipping calculator as posted in the first post the post cost was lower that it returned.
There was a Norton valve guide tool on UK eBay a while back and the best postage the seller could find was around £60 to Australia.

Perhaps a reminder that it was not that long ago that mail came to this end of the planet via ship or flying boat.
To buy something overseas you used letter post and postal notes to pay.

Any duty or taxes are paid by receiver.

There are many ways round it but they can bite you back.

Yes, what I was saying that when I have had stuff shipped with fed ex I have never had any extra duty to pay, no gst ect, so I am only assuming that they build it into the freight bill and get it all paid on the way through, which also helps with delivery times

Re: Norvil Motorcycle and shipping quotes: overcharged quote

I sent stuff via Fed Ex to OZ, the guy had to pay $400 duty.

You can reduce the price, in OZ the cut off is $1000 but if you have to claim
for lost goods you loose out big time.

In Europe there is no duty payable but in USA, South Africa, Canada and OZ the taxes
can mount up so sent stuff as gifts. In Switzerland it is mega and one client picks up
chain at shows and takes it back in his car. Even with the costs involved he says it saves
him a fortune. S much for the "Global Economy".

Re: Norvil Motorcycle and shipping quotes: overcharged quote

A 31 quid part from Norvil costs $119 from a dealer In Australia. Even with over the top P&P it'd still be cheaper to import, but not when you want it now!
Part of the reason for the high P&P may be to protect the dealers?
The only way to reduce the P&P hit is to split the cost between a couple of other Norton owners (sorry for sounding like a broken record) and keeping the purchase below $1000. Classic bike club members are always looking for parts and as long as you get the doe up front there are no problems

Re: Norvil Motorcycle and shipping quotes: overcharged quote

I have adjusted the currencies, they should be at the correct exchange rates now. Apologies again.
No idea if Phil enjoys his time off- though I hope he does- I forbid him to think about work during his holidays and declined to get his contact details during that time.

Re: Norvil Motorcycle and shipping quotes: overcharged quote

Speaking of Andover Norton, the postie just dropped off a package that includes a new rear mudguard/fender for the 1971 Fastback.
I was supposed to fly to a new job today but luckily the motorcycle gods have intervened. :D
Tracking says a timing cover from MikesVintageParts (USPS $47) is in the country and the 8 bolt Triumph head from Denmark (FedEx $44) is on the truck for delivery today.
I can't see how the head could have cost so little to post (Denmark to Germany to France to China to Singapore to Australia)
I hope its not a box with a small rock inside.

Indeed it is,package weight was 3.5 kgs,the FedEx van dropped it off not long after the AN package.
Have to say for something that might be the best part of 56 years old it is in great condition, vapour blasted and it will look new. :D
It goes to show box dimensions probably make a big difference, the AN box (Parcel Force) was 4.3 kgs and $120.86.
The fact that these items travel the world to get to your door or mailbox says something for the modern post systems.

Re: Norvil Motorcycle and shipping quotes: overcharged quote

Big variation in cost, yesterday a parcel to Japan (Commando chain) cost £21 and one to South Africa
cost £11. In UK on April 1st (very apt) my £8.30 parcels went up to £15. Just before privatisation
was announced

Re: Norvil Motorcycle and shipping quotes: overcharged quote

It maybe a little harder for the dealers to use a logistics broker, but I have used them to send bits to Europe and and Australia and the prices were far lower than directly using the same carriers. Seems strange to think you can send a whole machine for a price similar to an average sized box, though the machine would usually go via sea freight.

My last postage bill from Norvil was 43 pound for 2 oil filters, 2 brake seal kits a maser cylinder cap a pair of handgrips and some O'rings after I had paid the 6 pound P&P charge through pay pal I received the following information by email. They had my money (through paypal so I could not reverse the transaction)
This is by far the highest postage I have been charged. Nearly worth picking it up if that keeps up :?

Thank you for your valued order.

Unfortunately you have paid insufficient p&p due to an error on the PayPal system

you have been charged for UK delivery.

Can you please forward a further payment of £37 to cover the postage and

to enable us to despatch.

Cheers

Jed

OVERSEAS CUSTOMERS
Our "ADD TO CART" facility does not currently work out the correct postage for items being shipped outside the UK, we will contact you with a postage request after we have processed your order

I have brought some Andover Norton parts here. (AN stanchions - AN fork rebuild kit - AN full 750 and 850 gasket sets - full RGM isolastic kits etc)
http://roadnrace.com.au/
I will get a AN transmission kit off them also and a bunch of other parts when I head home next month.

Their pricing (they are a authorized AN retailer) is very competitive when you factor in post from the UK and have quick processing.
Also when I emailed the NSW NOC asking if they could recommend a vender who could grind the crankshaft on my 750 I never got a reply.
A phone call to Mike at Classic Road and Race fixed that,he was more than happy to help with two sources.

very important to get the crank done by someone who knows - some places don't bother dressing the grinding wheel to spec and grind off the .090" radius, which renders the crank scrap

Sad to say, The Norvil postage cost seems in line with Parcelforce (parcelfarce?) charges to Joe Public, but I'm sure the trade can access other far cheaper services
