I couldn't afford to enter those horrific cross continent deals but am building one someone could do it on. Interstate tanks are made for it. Maybe just Baja for me. Btw they paved Pikes Peak but seems to me only one half the fun and challenge not racing back down again, like I do here on. Even Graveled, hm.

That measured twice slicing and dicing nailing jig saw 3D puzzle eye opener is not lost on me, wheweee. Seeing it here makes me think of the wooden Barrels of Death.

I have a set of "right side up" Hausaberg forks that I plan to put on a long travel bike. Hausaberg builds a nice long travel frame that I think might be easier to adapt to a Norton engine than a KTM frame. What I like about that Norvana though is that it is somewhat of a "could have been" bike with parts that were not too far removed from the Norton production years. A build like that would be a good platform for your "twingle engine", Jim.

One thing that I think would be an absolute blast would be to enter a Norton powered bike into a race like the Dakar! With the 1007cc that Jim has been testing, add some serious cooling mods and a really good rider I think it would get world wide attention.

Now that sounds like fun - and lots of money.

The frame I was eyeballing for a norton Is a 84 KTM 495 frame. Twin rear shocks. Not too far from the Hausaberg frame actually. Tuck my short coupled five speed in it. Then use some newer forks and good shocks with 8 to 10 inches of travel and it would be a fun fire road blaster. Jim

Looks like a fun bike. Hybrids can be really interesting. I just finished dropping a Yamaha FZ600 engine into a Honda XR600 chassis, and it's a blast to ride. Areally light dual sport Norton would be great.

hehe, knee tall grass covered rough pasture and fire lane roads like they race rally cars on IS NOT OFF ROADING TO THE LIKES OF Ms Peel, just normal commuting and refreshment even a bone stock Commando can handle pretty darn good routinely, though the factory bikes can't take it like Ms Peel. I am so sold on the isolastics frame with Peel's one in a row 3 links set up and my fork mods, so expect to put vintage Commando name in new light of pecking orders no matter the conditions.

Hehe I've actually not done that much severe off roading as its so danergous I'm too scared not to have others around to help me and bike back after crashes or report me missing and last seen...

This is the level I want to play with Peel in and essentially already have, even the sharp wall turn elevated over a drop so no room or fork range enough to turn sharp enough so rear slide around used, though doing it around a tree on slope with drop off a few stories down to ravine bottom full of forest debris on loose leaves, so had to lean even further out d/t bar clearing the tree trunk I was trying not to hug. I love the short cuts taken by the leader jumping off ramp at diagonal as about the same as me on Peel coming home after spanking the tires off sport riders so still seeking some real trills to just leap off culvert into creek bed thats similar to the tire fields and bowling balls and root masses with stump in the center. I did it routinely to warm up for Graveled run to pavement then heat tires for refreshment flings. There are a few tree falls across this spring branch I'm sorely tempted to try but for no crash cage in case I can't deal with the far end root mass sticking up vertical and rotten bark not giving thrust grip as slides off in sheets. Sheeze.

One of the badest thing Peel survived was seeing a 6ft tall almost vertical embankment at a friends place I just shot right up it 30's mph to get a few feet air borne but didn't know there was a foot deep drainage rut just beyond the crest cross wise to travel in the grass, so landed in that nose first to trap tire to bottom forks silently as helmet hit yokes then blasted back up unexpected to get hit in tail bone as rear launched up, but didn't fall and didn't injure anything, whew, but gave me knowledge of what Peel could take beyond the impacts and obstacles of the Red Bull event.

As usual I'm saying ya just don't know what ya missing out, on or off road with likes of Ms Peel. Hehe I was able to stay seated on Peel in places the MX and trial bikers on theit pegs, but they just stuck to the beaten course wild as that was, was too boring to me so took off in raw untraveled woods so brushy thick surprising deer and encountering stuff that did toss me and Peel down.

Im not so sure a Husaberg frame would be a very good starting point, the next smallest engine would be a two stroke 250mx bike, maybe a 500 but that is only due to the cylinder head height. The Husaberg engine (and gearbox) is only a tiny bit longer front to back than the Norton crank case. They do have a big spine/backbone frame like the Commando though! If I was going to do some thing like this I would start with an XR600/500 or TT frame which would be a bit bigger to start with and not be post fabrication heat treated cromolly.

Here are a couple of bikes along the ideas talked about here

Gosh those are beautiful light beasts to behold but I'm sticking to or making do with an isolastic clunker.

Oh my Ludwig don't ya know I've been on edge of my seat watching tours I'm missing out on d/t no real job last decade+. I admire your lightened Cdo success and great ride adventures so you are on my list to confuse no end once Peel's up and going. I can't take your flak very personal as half my hobby is to induce that attitude on purpose, as so much sweater reactions soon after witnessing the impossible. I do not have to leave my property to have as bad or worse scary conditions, through falling a few stories ain't as bad a risk as falling hundreds of feet, still similar groin grip to teeth gritting pain. My training did not have anything to do with on purpose self confidence practice intentional-expectations, but by hazards thrown at me so nothing to lose going bezerk and saving crash, more often than not, but too often SPLAT. If just going as timid as possible still slaps me down, my brain-emotions rebelled at my stupid hobby, so I get into hateful angry state against fate where things happen so fast and harsh fear just adds adrenalin to burn.

I keep yelling about the wonders of the tri links with only one robust firm 'rump' link, as its more intense and orgasmic than multi orgasms or even pretty good dose of psychedelics and want others to get into similar states of glee before they can't. Even going straight in real off road stuff there are conflicting side loads on the frame and Peel takes that up like an internal suspension. Picture front snapped side ways off fist size rock while rear kicked the other way off crest of a rut, Peel has a progressive twist take up and resistance to this so feels like a flag in wind with waves passing through but not wrapping around the pole. Also Peel didn't send shocks or jars though me as other cycles do, so uncannty crossing stuff seated and catching some air between hi points w/o needing much skill to stay on it. Its more wild fun than spanking sports bikes a gear shift faster around turns w/o any fear of crashing but something in the way after blinds. Peel can jerk around tarmac turns so sharp and harsh my vision dims and tunnels down yet it doesn't scare me like just leaving pavement to get home in one piece.

We've pastures with like a mile of free runs but in rolling contours its seems like big ocean swells in a small boat. No big rocks, no trees, no fences and no set path to follow but lumps and bumps air born instants that flash me into real flights of fantasy. In our woods one does have to keep in mind old fence lines hidden in brush ugh. Hope never to get this much air... but ending up all tangled in brush and fence is definitely part of the expected.
