Hi I'm new to this site but can anybody help I'm looking for a set of mudguards for a norton mercury 1968 or what will fit it do not want chrome gards as want to paint them if anyone can help would be greatful or some dimensions so I can get them made or use universal one

Atlas parts will fit the Mercury. Try an EBay search for Norton Atlas.

Slick

I can't find anything about the Mercury mudguards in my literature.

Its a featherbed frame, but the guards are not the same shape as an Atlas - much lighter, like a scrambler

Norton mercury

Was there a parts book for the Mercury ?
Jist curious...

A Commando (stainless) front guard would fit ?
If you work at it, could be painted....

Thank for for your reply I can't seem to find part book for the mercury have looked very where but no luck someone must have one somewhere

I have asked norton andover about early commando guards and they said they will not fit but I'm not so sure about front as they used the same forks on early commando just have to keep looking I suppose

People used to say the Mercury had Matchless/AJS mudguards, if that's any help in searching for something that looks right.

Thanks for the info most interesting will hAve to look and see what they look like

Did they happen to say why they won't fit ?
What about the later stainless guards, for the 850 models.

I've fitted Commando later front guards to several prewar bikes even - the bridge and stays needed some adjustment and for length, but the blade itself is a good shape to neatly fit on and over the front wheel/tyre - and they are fairly inexpensive compared to even generic/universal guards, which usually aren't such a good fit...

No they didn't say way just they didn't do mercury guards but it was them that put me on to this site another specialist rgm said commando front guard which is looking likely have asked norvil but the man with the answer is on holiday so see if he can shed some light on the matter look at ajs matchless but can't find any of them for sale at moment

1st, just in case any p.o. changed the forks look at the centres to determine if you have 7 inch or later 73/8 inch fork yokes .

Yes I have done that and they are 7 3/8 so looks like a commando mudguards is the way forward with the front thanks for pointing the fork out for me

I think early Commando would work for the front and may also work for the back with some fettling.

AJS/Matchless might work if undrilled because AMC mudguards differed in two ways: 1) the stays go over the top rather than under; 2) the stays had tabs for four fixing bolts - two on the front of the stay, two on the back, so 8 bolts in total for the front. The bolts were specials - 1/4 thread with a small (like 2BA) washer-base head on the bolt.

The Mercury should have the same attachment as the early Commando - under-fender stays with screws and nuts on each stay.

As I understand it, the entire run of Mercurys ran from Mid-October to early December, 1968 (s/n 129146 to 129895) before the start-up of 1969 Commando production.

Like some of the late G80CS and N15/G15 machines, Mercury bikes may have sat in warehouses for a while before being sold.

The last post above might be worth investigating as I understand it, Norton moved to the Plumstead factory , which is Matchless/AJS so there was mix and match of parts like the P11 :!:

Have looked at ajs and matchless just as hard to fined any guards for them as it is the mercury

I had a look at ajs / matchless they are just as head to fined thought about p11 look much the same and just as hard to sorse as well
