Hello,
I have a 1971 Norton Commando with engine number 20M3S 149507. The tag on the frame reads Jul 71. It was titled as a 1972.
Question: Does anyone have a higher number then 149507? This must have been one of the last 71's made before 200001.
Thanks

The '71 series continued to around (20M3S) 153500.

Ok, I didn't know it went past 153500.
Do you know how many number sequences there were between each bike made on the production line?
Example: 149507 next 149600 etc.?

No, I don't know, but the extremely limited amount of factory dispatch record information we have seen suggests it's unlikely there were many (if any?) gaps in the serial numbers at that time.

I guess then we will never know.

I expect it's possible to find out but it would probably mean going to the VMCC (or UK NOC) records office.
One factory dispatch book page we have seen from that period certainly shows every number between 151673 and 151703 was allocated.

Various sources give the last '71 as 150500 but that has to be an error.

You. Mine is 152346. It was a Canadian bike until I purchased it 3 years ago. If you rearrange the numbers, they are 123456, which I believe was Commander Scroob's secret luggage code.

On my own list I have been compiling for many years the latest 71 spec machine I have is VIN 154782.
Thanks for the info, I was wondering how long the 1971 run went to. I just bought a set of cases that were 151582 (posted as 1972?) and I was worried someone had re-stamped them. Whew!
Cheers,

Hi. My Commando 750 is marked sept 1971 serial 152493

My first Commando was 201123 a ‘72 combat roadster with Oct 72 date on the red plate. Likely Norton continued building ‘71 models after starting the 200xxx series for ‘72 model year.

My first Commando (where are you now?) was a Black 1971 Roadster serial 152681 with Sept 1971 on the plate

Norton assembled and shipped machines in a very non linear fashion. My single page copy of the factory records for this model year for example
151676 built Oct 9, 1971 shipped to Berliner Oct 12
151677 built Oct 7, 1971 shipped to Berliner Oct 29
Just for info both were signal orange roadsters
Several others with later numbers built earlier than previous numbers. Sort of indicates they were “fettled” on the line.
