Norton Cul De Sac Quarantine Interviews

Great Ideas on the bike show and tell theme.
(1972 Norton Commando Combat Production Racer Replica) At the +8:00 min mark your wiring loom looks real close to getting pinched between the steering stops, at least from the camera perspective. Might want to zip-tie the headlamp loom and switch gear looms together up higher out of the way.
Keep it up. Cheers,

Thanks. Do you mean the steering stops on the bottom yoke? If so I’m not using those. The forks hit the fairing bracket first. I spent a bit of time making sure everything clears.

"Do you mean the steering stops on the bottom yoke?"

Yes,
I was worried about that because it happened to me. During a last minute long distance preparation for a road trip down to Barber with my brother-in-law, I put in some Eastern Beaver headlamp relays and didn't take enough care to tidy up the wires. While going through the tunnels on the Blue ridge in NC, I realized that my headlight wasn't working and when I replaced the fuses it continued to blow. Then I saw the crushed wires after further investigation. A bit of reverse engineering and trips to the auto parts store got me going again but it goes to show Norton's don't allow you too much for sloppy errors. That practice come back to haunt you.
Cheers
Tom

I wouldn’t use this video as a good example of well tuned carbs. After Mike shot this I went home for some more tweaking.

You should hear a difference in the second half of this video after I put the vacuum gauges on and balanced the carbs.

As for an off idle lean I don’t know how you avoid that without pumper carbs.

I only had a couple of minutes to view. I did not watch any of the videos past the arrival. I'll look later. I know there are some good moments in those. Thanks again for putting up the links. Seriously I had been looking for examples of running Nortons with good sound output. I didn't know those existed. Been out of touch for decades.

Pumpers might work. Fuel injection would be nice.

It's been a long time since I had the Amals on my P11. I remember the hot carburetor sticking slide syndrome. The short intake manifolds on the P11 are really short and too darn close to the head heat. I think I was down to the choice of getting the bodies sleeved, or doing something else entirely. I decided to box the Amals up, and put them on the shelf.

Hard as it may be to believe, I don't have the off idle lean tip-in hiccup issue with the 34mm Mikuni carburetors I'm using, but I do not run a lean tune by any stretch of the imagination, and my intake manifolds are modified and seal better than the typical conversion manifold carburetor mounts. Grizzly bear brown rather than mousey tan is my plug color. Dialing the fuel delivery in took quite a bit of fiddling with the length of my 2 into 1 exhaust, and I pulled the muffler cone out of the exhaust and installed a Supertrap plate arrangement in it. It's loud, but no worse than those little 4 banger tuner drift cars. Also fiddled with the intake length, and run 3" velocity stacks. I probably farted around some with the needle and jets, but it was a long time ago, and I don't remember exactly what I did. For some reason and to my complete amazement it works though.

Anyway, I'm not pooping on Amals. They work great at WOT. I just don't like the design much for my engine.

Nice to see your video, are you able to use the crossover tube spigots to hook up the vacuum gauges? If so, perhaps I can use my gauges for my Hayabusa? Today, I just set mine up by ear and it’s better than it was. I still need to sort out the mains as it’s only got 230s and I think it needs 260s

I had to google fist what CUL de Sac means. Funny that you Americans use the French word for dead end street!
It’s a dead end street with a turn around circle. That’s the cul de sac. Looks like an old style key hole.

Nice bike Swoosh and nice vid too.

Just one critique, your comment on cam wear and inability to adjust valve clearance is misleading.

Valves are adjusted with the follower on the base circle... cams wear on the lobes.

There is NO relationship between valve clearances and cam wear at all...

You are correct, I meant to say if you notice an absence of lift you should check the cam.

Actually, in the US, we generally use "dead end street" to mean a street that simply ends. A Cul-de-sac is generally a street that opens into a circle/oval/teardrop with houses around as in the video Dave posted.

Yup, Cul-de-Sac is in a housed neighborhood. Houses all around.
Dead end street, usually no houses, where lots of social differences get settled.......

obstacle avoidance - have you seen the Tesla on autopilot obliterate the rolled over truck?

I am sure to remember this when someone tells me autos on autopilot are safe!

Imagine being on a commercial flight, and 5 minutes after takeoff you hear " Good morning ladies and gentlemen, I am your auto-pilot pilot, in fact, you have a complete virtual crew. It is perfectly safe, nothing can go wrong ... go wrong ... go wrong ..."

Slick

It's the future..... From a recent article on technology expected to be trialled in the UK next year:

'Automated Lane Keeping Systems will be able to take over driving on motorways, suggesting it will allow users to do other things, such as watch a movie on their phone or read the newspaper'

I'm too old for all this..... (apologies for thread drift, perhaps I need outside control after all!)

Yes I became addicted during lock down to this channel.
It has unlocked many of the mysteries on the workings of a Vincent. Even though I look from afar and have read a book or two, is not the same as sharing virtual space in the workshop, as one is pulled apart and repaired. They are so fascinatingly different from any other classic Brit that I have owned over the years.
Also very educational on the subtle differences on the Manxman, versus other later 650's.

The autopilot does a lot more of the flying that you would think.

The end of that video demonstrates quite nicely that the only thing that sounds better than a Commando... is two Commandos !

We didn't have all four rumbling but there was a good gaggle that day.

But we did get four Commandos out for a ride a few weeks earlier.

No doubt it does, but the subtle difference is that there is no one sharing the same air space as you, it is all controlled by the air traffic controllers - but even they occasionally make a mistake and we get at best, a near miss.
I do not think auto pilots in cars is 100% safe, and would only allow it if there is an additional alarm system that monitors the driver from falling asleep and unable to take avoiding action should something going wrong somewhere along the line. It's no joke if you go and knock down and kill someone a child who runs out into tje road even, just because it was set on a auto drive system.
