i have a norton commando 850. is it possible anyone knows the permissable end float in the cam shaft. at present i have one steel concaved washer and one bronze thrust washer inside the crank cases on right hand side.i have approx 3-4mm. is it possible that this float would be taken up when cam chain is fitted on sprockets under momentum

It is important that the cam lobes don't operate two lifters at once. Otherwise I can't see a problem with excessive end float, except that t he chain line might cause the sides of the sprocket to wear as it tries to self- align.

I believe 3 to 4mm or more is common.
It has always been a given the the tach gearing keeps it to the right. I suppose this is true but it does beg a question.
What if you run an electronic tach and the guts are pulled and you have the boss blanked off?

i thought this was the case.

do you know the permissable end float on the crank shaft and if what ive got which is about 1mm, should i shim this clearance up on the insiude of both main bearing inner racies

.1270mm - .3810mm or .005" - .015" as stated in the workshop manual. You do have one of these, don't you?

Although you haven't mentioned the type,

the Mk3 is .010" to .024" or .254mm to .610mm.

Hi ,what kind of camshaft bushes do you have , as it seems strange to have a bronze washer inside (say between the steel champhered one and the bush.....° AFAIK.....!
