As usual, with many things, my philosophy is "commando on the cheap".

I'm looking for a new chain in the msc industrial "big book", which lists the chains by dimensions, what I've measured is a pitch of .625 x .400 diameter roller with a width of .375

chains are available in carbon steel, about $40, nickel plated steel, $65, and stainless $180

any thoughts or advice?

many thanks,

Don

Depends on how often you replace your chain. They make chain lube I hear.

uhh, thanks Dave...I think

If you're going to ride it, get a o-ring setup. I like the gold one. If you're going to show it, do the same. I have a front 19t sprocket on ebay for ya and any (almost) local machine shop can turn your hub for a few bucks.

As the weather here has been unusually dry, I've been riding more than ever, and though it's not much to look at (in comparison to the beauties I see here) whenever I take it out, I make a new friend or two... mostly old guys, and never young chicas.

But unless I have to remove the primary for another reason, the expense and work involved with the o-ring conversion would be too much for an old fool such as myself. Just curious if anybody here has tried the nickel-plated option.

My feeling would be to watch the outside dimensions and also check loads and maximum speeds. It would be a shame to smash a casing for the price of a chain.

520 O-ring almost to sometimes rubs the gear box. Can't imagine 530 O-ring. Stay away from industrial stuff. If it isn't built for MC it probably won't last. O-ring 520 or regular MC 530. Just my 2¢

It was reading more about it - as per that #4 item and other similar stuff - that made me decide last year against changing to O-ring chain. I recently ordered a new sprocket (20 teeth to replace my 22) and standard 530 chain from Old Britts.
