Just thought I'd post this to verify the old saying that NEW (N-E-W) only means Never Ever Worked.

Today I helped a friend install a new rear master cylinder on his Triumph T-160. He was putting all new brake parts on the bike - new front caliper/MC/SS lines and a new MC and ss lines on the rear. We installed the brand new rear MC. We could not get it to create a hard pedal. Despite thorough and repeated bleeding the pedal was initially firm but would then push through and braking force went away. After trying all sorts of adjustments we removed the new master cylinder and took it apart. The forward piston cup had a groove in it that was allowing the pressure to bleed off. It almost looked like someone had accidentally grooved it in manufacture. It was not torn or cut. Again - a brand new, out of the box MC from a well-known supplier.

We reinstalled the original, rusty 1975 master cylinder and it worked perfectly.

So remember, NEW only means it was never installed, it does NOT mean it isn't broken.
