Getting ready to pull the timing cover to blank off the oil feeds to the cylinders as advised by a few folks on the VOC forums. While in there, I have decided to also pull the Lucas DKX2A (Series D) distributor and replace it with electronic ignition. I bought the distributor new from a classic bike dealer in the mid 80’s. It was a great improvement over the Lucas mag at that time. Later, I determined the distributor was only advancing about 20-22 degrees crankshaft which is a bit short of the engine spec.

I know the apparent reputation of the Tri-Spark system among the folks on these and other forums, but the factory claims to have worked out the earlier problems with them. The Tri-Spark retard mode for starting is a great boon to the Commando, so it is very appealing for the Black Shadow as well. I'll be 64 next week and am concerned about my knees while kicking the beast over.

In any case, I have the kit from Tri-Spark and all the drive gear from VOCS. It looks like the only change from the standard vertical twin system is the re-location of one of the magnets on the rotor..?

Also, just curious if anyone else here in running that system?

Best regards,

Russ

Howdy Russ
I installed a Trispark ignition a few weeks ago and 1200 miles later Im very happy with it. Starts first or second kick, easy to install and at this stage cant fault it. Good luck

Glad to hear, Mal. I only have about 200+ miles on mine but like it so far. I found the install to be fairly straight forward, though that nut on the engine side of the triangular base was a challenge. ;-)

Are you telling us that a magneto advances more than 22 degrees on a Vincent?

Yes decrees of crankshaft.
It looks like the a/r on the Vincent v twins are different to those fitted on the parallel twins coming out of the rest of the British factories.
