Yes, that's the sort of thing I'm thinking off.. great minds think alike !
 
Machined up the new alloy washers, made to take a recessed cap head. Also made a couple of bushes, as the 8mm cap head is much smaller than the hole in the frame for the pillion peg. Mistakenly thought that the exhaust mount was just a stainless washer, but its a bush which goes through the rubber bung. For now just bolted the new washer on top. May get then hard anodised over the winter when I have a few more parts to coat, from another project.

Looks great Pb, but does the additional Norton badge draw the eye to the obvious redundant nature of the mounting. It would be better if the mounting point wasn't there of course - for those of us that will never carry a pillion. The cap head screw and washer option looks like it might be there for a reason. My thoughts only.

Wonder how difficult/expensive it would be to have a single seater mounting frame manufacturered?

Yep I can see your point and as I said still can't make up my mind , so maybe badge on one side and alloy on tother. Depending on what my mood is on the day ,looking on the left or right side of the bike and also confusing the rivet counters out there.
 
Why not just hack the unneeded bit off, smooth, paint, job done ?

Donington Norton sold me a pair of rear sub frames without the pillion parts when I had mine. I guess it’s a long shot, but perhaps work asking the new folks? Or someone like Stu?

Have given that thought before FE, but they might take a bit of butchering to remove the redundant sections. Not sure how easy that would be to patch, clean up and return to original standard finish.

Not sure about strength either - ya know, when some old knacker stands up on the pegs to stretch his old hips off!! Don’t think that would be transferred to the rear of the frame though. Can’t see there being spares around - not possible to convert single to double - worth trying though.

It’s been a third-order thing for me - did’nt bother me that much. Just about to convert to a single seater though so looking to clean that derrière up. Probably get the guys looking at mounting the Thruxton fairing to sort it out, if/when I pull the pin.

If you just want to remove the small triangle where the pillion peg mounts, then cutting it off and smoothing down the welds should work. Matching the exact satin black powder coat may not be so easy. But if you don't want to cut up the original part, then making a pair replica sub frames without the pillion mount should be doable. I'd use the OE part to make a simple jig, source the same O.D tubing and fabricate a pair of replacements. Something I've already thought about, but I have other projects which keep me busy.
 
Couple of pics from the dealer when I was waiting for my bike to be serviced. The V4 is a demo, I was asked if I wanted to go out on it, I declined, as I'm not interested in buying such a bike, and I wouldn't push it, as I'd be terrified of damaging it. The special edition looked better in the flesh than online. The CCMs are ok, very customisable, but over priced imo.. This was £15K.

Yes the red, white and blue ones look great, I was admiring one up close at Krazy Horse last weekend.

The grey striped JPS ones look good from some angles as well, but a bit ‘busy’ from others.

It’d be a toss up between those two for me, and certainly not the ‘Manx’ or the puke yellow job.

But… with the discounts available on the standard bikes that are not applied to the LE’s… you’re talking a £6k paint job !

The CCMs are rather niche. Definitely more about form over function (to my eye, unto each his own).

The last serious bike they made was the GP450, a great bike and very innovative, but with a pretty shit engine (I had one).

The new bikes have a far superior engine. It is such a shame they don’t make a GP600 with this engine.

And yet the CCM will run circles around the 961. Oh and the CCM I believe offers door to door services.
Titanium frame. Carbon fiber. Billet aluminum. Made in England.

Only one model had a Ti frame, made in very low numbers, cost over £30,000.. doubt they've sold many. I have ridden a recent CCM, yes its light and flickable, but in the real world, with traffic and the need to overtake, a 961 would soon leave it behind. It's a niche bike, sounds good on paper, not so good in the cold light of day. CCM offers home servicing as they have so few dealers.

How many dealers does Norton have?
How long have you been a member of this forum or owner of the 961? The 961 was riddled with issues for years.

Don’t see how a heavier, slower bike is going to overtake a lighter faster bike in traffic or open road.

Your comparison of cost is the same argument of the Triumph vs Norton. Triumph is cheaper and better performing.
 
CCM have 6 dealers according to their website, none above Bolton in the UK Norton currently have 10, with some dealers having more than one location. My local dealer has two sites near me I could go to. Given the well known issues with the Donnington era bikes, I stayed well clear, despite liking the 961. The TVS Nortons according to everything I've read are much much better.. so I bought one.
