ok i just got a new magneto and i have been trying to get this thing running steady, but when i eventually do get the thing started i have to hold the throttle half way and if i let the throttle go it stalls. i then retarded the timing a little and after about 10min of trying to start it it started but flames and sparks were constantly shooting out of the exhaust. I dont know wether the flames were due to the straight pipes that i have or if my timing was too advanced. I am open to any opinions or tips on my timing issue. Thank you.

I'll go first.

What kind of bike?

pretty sure its a 62 matchless engine on a norton frame. It has the k2f mag the serial num on the engine is G15(N or M idk which one)L13297

That would be a Norton motor in a Matchless frame.

I take it this is a Lucas mag? And by "new" that is "newly rebuilt"?

Lock the advance unit to full advance, set the crank at desired full advance (31 degrees BTDC if I remember correctly for the mags) with a degree wheel and the points should just be opening (use a light or a buzz box or thin cellophane between the points (used to be cigarette wrapper)). If you don't have a degree wheel, run it to TDC then turn it backwards with a thin stiff wire vertical on the piston until it drops 1/4 inch. After you bolt the advance unit up, take out the advance lock.

This should get it running without popping.

PS - check both sets of points as you may need to split the difference on the old mags.
