Frameplate is is the later type compared to the one on my '72 combat and it is attached upside down. Normal position is read from the left side of the bike with the VIN on the left side. My plate has top line Manufactured By then second line NORTON VILLIERS LIMITED.

Wow, good observation on data plate! I wonder how that happened? The rivet's seem to be original, undisturbed. However there is no date stamped

It appears to have the correct "G.V.W.R. 859 lbs...etc" 06-3247 certification plate for '1972', and we've seen apparently undisturbed plates facing the opposite way before, so I'm not sure that information can be considered totally reliable.

Looking at the image closely I think whoever stamped the date wasn't paying attention and made a mess of it because it looks as if the serial number and the date have been stamped in the same place?

I wouldn't necessarily have said so myself.

You seem to say that a lot in this thread. I think Labs explanation could be perfectly valid. But the sellers lack of coms with you and lack of ability / willingness to answer would be my biggest concern here.

Its not a particularly rare beast, and its not a particularly good price... personally, I'd leave it alone at keep looking elsewhere.

he just emailed me and said he had a family emergency , and will get me a better photo so I'll give him the benfit of the doubt. If the date was super iumposed over the vin and everything can be read, it would appear to be a factory mess up.

In the US an unrestored , low mileage, never apart Norton Combat with original factory paint is a rare beast. I have not seen one for sale in years. However I'm not 100% sure that it is totally untouched/unrestored , pretty sure but not 100%

Re: Need Norton expert in Georgia to look at unrestored Com

I think price is fair .... I paid almost that in CAD for an almost similar condition bike ( bit rougher ) more than 15 years ago and felt I got a deal .... like I said earlier , I hope it works out and you get yourself an untouched Combat ... pretty cool after all this time .... good luck with this

" totally untouched/unrestored , pretty sure but not 100%"
Jimbo,
If one of the top fins is missing on the cylinder barrel (as you indicated on the upper picture), that would tell me that someone levered the area with a screwdriver to take the head off and didn't check that all the bolts were free. This is a common mistake, as the head will lift off by valve spring pressure from cam overlap on one of the cylinders if all bolts were removed. Also, look at the carb nuts / studs that hold the carb to the manifold...There should be spring "lock" washers present and these are missing. It looks like the last bike owner, when it was running was not using the silencers and the dude used a bracket he fabricated to hold the down pipe from flailing about in the wind. Check the Z plate. My guess is the 100% untouched just went down.

Thomas

The sellers photos appear to show steel fuel tank and side panels.
Were 1972 Combat models delivered with steel or fiberglass parts?

Steel is better for today's use of course.

Both types are listed for 1972 Black Roadster.

Re: Need Norton expert in Georgia to look at unrestored Com

I'm always amazed how much money a junky rolling basket case Norton brings when you can always find a nice running example for 1-2 thousand more.
Crazy.

He sent me some more photos, it looks like someone stamped the date twice! "1972 APR"

Possibly because the plate is fitted facing the 'opposite' way, the date was stamped in the serial number box by mistake, (either before or after the serial number was added) and the date then re-stamped below the serial number.

I think anyone intent on deception would almost certainly have made a better job of it, so probably an innocent production line foul-up by the looks of things! :D

that seems very reasonable, I think the mystery has been solved ! :D

it should look like this, kind of, without the date on the wrong side of course! ( I doctored it up a little with photoshop) APR 1972 , "207713"

Re: Need Norton expert in Georgia to look at unrestored Com

It's hillarious to me that guys with non-runners want $5,000. for their "project" bike, like this unknown bike has a lump of gold as it's crankshaft counterweight...

here's a link to a 73 with rear sets, belt drive, and extra production racer tank and plastics for under $5,000. It looks like it lives in a garage. It runs, and looks like it's well taken care of... Granted you never know what's inside by what's on the outside!... but check this bike out on Charlotte's craigslist

The red frame is ugly to me, but it's not some rusty crap for $5,000.

Re: Need Norton expert in Georgia to look at unrestored Com

Nice bike and price. The PR tank, seat, and fairing are nice extras.
Posted on CL 22 days ago and not yet sold?

Re: Need Norton expert in Georgia to look at unrestored Com

that serial number seems like it could be legit .... the bike above is nice too .... although red frames are for Ducati not Norton .... still price seems pretty good and it might run .... not sure on shipping either .... however it has been touched and is now some one else's idea of a nice bike ...
