Hi
Need some help with the front mudguard.
Would someone post a photo of the front mudguard bridge to fender attachment. I received a bridge and mudguard from Walridge, however the bridge is a bit wider than the mudguard, and will require some work to match the mudguard.
So I am interested in how the bridge conforms to the mudguard and how the bridge legs exit from the mudguard.

Also, what type of bolt head is used on the mudguard stay to fork slider? Is it flat or domed?

Thanks

Depending on the year, the mudguard bolts should be 1/4 CEI with either a 2BA washered head or a 3/16W domed head
The bridge should go over the top of the mudguard and would be centered - the radius extends just past the edge on each side, and is fastened to the mudguard via 6 rivets.

My original G80CS has the washered head bolts on the mudguards. It also has the same fender, bridge and stays as the N15/G15, except the fender is alloy (Norton-Matchless switched to chromed steel in '67 or so due to stress cracking)

My G15CS and Ranger have the 3/16W bolts, but those were both basket cases. The rear fender on the Ranger was still bolted to the frame via 1/4 bolts, so I assume it came that way. I have not seen another Ranger with the small head fender bolts, but have seen some early N15s with the small head bolts.

Thanks Bill
Over the top, I have re-reviewed some images and one from Anthony Curzon does give me a partial that shows this. I just had it in mind that it went under.
This bike falls into the 66/67 range from what I can determine. No ribbed mudguards, nipped in oil tank, Bulged fuel tank for badges with screw expander type lid, stronger head steady. serial # N15CS/116xxx.
I cannot really tell from your post, when the 3/16W domed head bolts were used. Are you able to expand on that?

Thanks

Also, what is the finish suppose to be on the bridge? Painted, or plated or ?
If painted what color?

Thanks

Sorry, I don't really know. I know the small head bolts were used in the early '60s and the 3/16W for the last, but cannot say if there was a cut off, or a slow switch-over based on parts availability.

I would guess that after AMC went bankrupt in '66, they used anything on hand to finish bikes and push them out the door.

If anyone alive knows, it would by Tony Curzon.

Its perhaps worth pointing out that "3/16W" are really what most would call 1/4" size.

Since genuine Whitworth stuff is one spanner (wrench) size smaller than British Standard sizes
i.e. 3/16"W = 1/4" BS
And are likely to be 26 tpi CEI, although I've not examined them to be certain of this.
(So there is nothing whitworth about them !).

And, Nortons used very very little genuine Whitworth anywhere,
except for the timing cover screws, and the rocker shaft oval cover bolts.
(Both threaded into aluminium, so a good coarse thread where its needed).

A very minor point, but it has been noted that murricans seem to call everything in the way of british nuts and bolts and threadtypes as "whitworth", when whitworth is really only one of probably several dozen threading systems used in the UK over the centuries...
