A TON!
Come on to the highway, shifted to forth at 70mph and the road was clear, so I ducked down and kept on climbing. Slightly up hill and a good cross wind. Came top the 100mph mark soon enough, maybe 15 to 20 seconds, at 5600 to 5700 rpm. Not bad for a forth gear push. Super solid and super smooth. Neither a twitch nor a shutter. Lovin that cam and carbs. A lotta meat left on the bone.

Now where in the hell do I get a sticker and patch. No local chapters. A little reluctant to get a bootleg patch or sticker but I've done worse things.

I did that back around 73 or so on 95 North from Beltsville going towards Baltimore one Sunday morning early. Just let it go flat out in 4th until it stopped climbing. As I remember it quit at about 120 on the speedo, but I have no idea what the real speed was, but it never got to 7K. Scared the bejesus out of me and never did it again. I guess we all have to do it.

Congrats too.

Well done!

We both have Jim Schmidt's flat slides and boy do they flow! I flat love mine, idle like a rock and strong all through.

Can I ask what cam did you put in? I had Jim Mosher install a Megacycle 5600 when he did my rebuild a year ago.

Your's is a combat, stock was a 19 tooth countershaft, is that what you are running with nowadays?

I bought a Combat brand new back in 72 and when broken in and me weighing maybe 135 pounds, at sea level I was able to pull a top speed of 113mph, this with the 19 tooth and clocked with a laser speed gun certified, back then they allowed us to pay a fee on Saturday's at the local drag strip.

I brought it to redline earlier in the season in second gear to feel the upper end effects of the cam and carb. AWESOME! I feel 125 mph is easily attainable. 100 mph @ 5650 rpm = 125 mph @ 7000 rpm

I have Jims stage 1 with the BSA radius lifters and pushrods.
Also running 20 tooth on the RGM belt drive ratio. Best of both worlds. I know the RGM drive ratio is a little higher the stock setup but I haven't made any calculations

My effort was with a stock 69S with maybe 5K miles on it and I don't have any desire to do it again.

I'm not going to say that I will be going there again anytime soon, but it's nice to know it's there. The desire is there but the nerve is fleeting.

I have a book that compiles all the motorcycle magazine's road tests of Commandos through the years.

The tested, certified no BS top speed runs were all around 115mph, only the Production Racer could pull 125.

These were all box stock bikes, as sold to the public, but with magazine "professional" road testers doing the riding.

They did not go by visualizing the speedometer, they used speed guns, sea level, little or no wind.

Yeah, mine will still redline easily in 2nd at about 70, or at least it feels like it will, but I haven't done it yet. I need to get it on 66W towards Front Royal some morning, it's only about 8 miles away. My nerves are shot, I have bad dreams at night now and they scare me bad enough.

A 750 with a 19 tooth sprocket will redline in 4th gear (DAMHIK). With a tire the same height as a 4.10H-19 the theoretical speed is about 107 mph at 7000 rpm .

Ron, I have no doubt that I was not going 120. That's just what the speedo said and it's probably way off at that speed. But I do remember it would not hit 7K, so maybe I never hit the real ton? But it was plenty fast enough, believe me. The scary part was it was still smooth and felt controllable.

I hear you Dave! I was just pointing out the inaccuracy of the Smiths speedos at those speeds.
