Missing valve spring insulating washers on intake

Guys My 850 commando does not have valve spring insulating washers on the intake valves. All of the manuals and parts lists have them Did they do something in 74 ? Should I be ordering them and putting them in? Would be interested in all comments. Thanks Drummer99
 
It is very possible that someone before you did not put them in or maybe even from the factory. Not unheard of. No big issue not having them in there.
Yes, I would probably put them in. This would even help tighten up the old valves a little. When I say old, I do not mean worn out.
 
my 74 850 had them under all valves but that is not to say it left the factory with him in. If you fit the check once head is fitted to engine that valve springs don't go coil bound which is far worse than any heat transfer issue. Unless you know the history of the bike you may no know why something has been changed an so if you have doubts check everything is as it should be valve length, springs etc.
Having said that I was told by Mick Hemmings that they where not supposed to be fitted at the factory to 850s but if you want them in an springs don't go coil bound they wouldn't hurt.
 
According to the factory parts book the valve insulating washers are used on the 750 and all of the 850 model Commandos through the Mark III for both intake and exhaust valves.
 
I bought new ones for my MKIIA but didn't use them as there weren't any fitted on the inlets when I stripped the head - just on the exhausts.
 
Most 850 heads only used the insulators on the exhaust side.

Installing them on the intake side also is not a bad idea if there is room. Check your valve spring installed height. jim
 
I bought my MKIII new, and when I revolved the head a few years back the insulating washers were only under exhaust springs. But like Jim said, it may not be a bad idea to install them on the intake side as well.

Be shure and check for coil bind.
 
They may even be helpful if for example the spring seating has been cut to deep or if valve seat has allowed the valve to fit to high in relation to the spring set so there would be less preload on the spring without the insulation washers fitted.
But as I an others have said on this measure an check before changing what you had if it was working ok.
