Re: New member

s/n 146666, that's almost Biblical! So, the early months of '71 were still stamping the cases in that area. Any historical data why they switched to the flat area of the case?

Re: New member

Mine is 143997 Jan 1971, despatched on 25th February 1971 to the Berliner Motor Corporation of the U.S.A.

Brownymark:

Where in NW UK are you? My wife and I are originally from Leyland - emigrated in 1968 after my short stint at N-V Wolverhampton. Now retired and living in NW Washington State (Anacortes) about 50 straight-line miles from the US/Canada border.

Welcome to the forum.

Re: New member

To answer "why did the serial number get moved?", I suspect it was to make the stamping task go more quickly. On the curved surfce, each digit would be hand stamped one at a time. On the flat surface, they would have used a holder that took all the individual stamps in a straight line and one hammer blow would do them all. They'd just have to change one or two stampsn the holder between bikes coming down the line, as the numbers progressed.

Re: New member

I hope you wore a hat, goggles and an apron. Wow, all that in under 2 months? I'm impressed.

Re: New member

Hello DogT
Unfortunately I did not - apparently I looked like a coal miner when I walked back in the house!
If I'm honest it is your " Phoenix" post which inspired me to buy the Norton, I thought it was excellent.
Its actually more than two months, bike arrived back in the UK last July so I have only been posting since the rebuild started in earnest

Re: New member

I think I kind of started mine in 06 and didn't finish until 10. But the dates on the thread will tell.

Re: New member

Collected chromed and polished parts yesterday - three months wait but worth it!

Nice!
Where did you get the plating done?
I have some rims which I can't get done locally - I'm near Garstang.

You far away?

Re: New member

Hi Andy,

Vernon Moss Electroplating in Halifax, they have done a great job, I would highly recommend them.

Definition is lost on the stamping on the rims and headlight but still great to be re-using them.

I am not too far away near Rochdale.

Cheers, Mark

Re: New member

I think I know the answer but thought I would ask anyway - would any of you reuse these tyres?
i think (maybe incorrectly) they may be original as the mileage on the bike is very low and all the bores/crank/bushes were as new.

The tyres are not hard nor cracked and the tubes are fine no repairs. Ignore the silver paint this is from PO spraying various parts.

Having the wheels rebuilt so need to decide whether to fit new or keep old.

Re: New member

Those tyres need to be replaced.
Are you willing to risk your life on the only think keeping your butt off of the pavement?
You can google "tire age replace", but what I remember is most manufacturers recommend replacing after 6-10 years.

They're Avon Roadunners so would not have been the original tyres.

Look on the side for a raised block with four digits; it's usually next to the U.S. DOT tire identification number. The first two indicate the week of its manufacture, and the last two are for the year. For example, 1702 would indicate the tire was manufactured in April, 2002. Prior to 2000, there were only three digits, with the last one indicating the year.

Re: New member

Yes Roadrunners.

Numbers are C432 & C362, from description I guess this is weeks 43 & 36 of a year ending in 2, don't know if this will be 92, 82 or 72 but either way irrelevant as the consensus seems to be to replace which I will do.

Thanks for the assistance again.

I don't think the date code was introduced until 1990, nevertheless, it would be wise to change them.

I'm not sure you are looking at the right numbers?
For example:
"428<" = week 42/1998 (3 digits & triangle)

"2103" = week 21/2003

It's been a while but not been slacking:

Head rebuilt with new valves, guides & springs, old valves were in good order but did not have oil seals on intake valves so I thought best to upgrade:

Cylinder bores were as new so a very light hone to remove glazing, blasted and repainted to silver as it should be:

Used the Halfords silver VHT paint as recommended other members then barbecued it for a while.

Wheels back from rebuild with new Dunlop tyres, decided to follow everyones recommendations and replace the old ones:

I think the re-chromed rims look great with the unpolished stainless spokes.

Hopefully get a little more done over the long Easter weekend :D
