I pretty much have my 74 850 ready for the road after 25 years. Replaced all cables, fork tubes - seals, etc., renewed the front disk and master cylinder and added a Boyer. Started 2nd kick and sounded good - no untoward noise from the engine. So everything seems in order, pretty much like I thought it would be since it ran great 25 years and 3 kids ago. Looking it over, however, I was wondering considering the amount of rust on the rotor should I have the rotor turned? It seems like the right thing to do but if unnecessary I would rather not waste the cash. Any suggestions?

If we are talking about surface rust, I would simply take a scotchbrite disc (roto-loc) on an air driven angle grinder. If it is pitted, then you may want to have it turned if they are not too deep.

If they are, replace the disc. That might be a good excuse to upgrade to a front disc package that works!

Surface rust will come off with no harm done the first time you apply the brake.

And be back a week later if the bike sits. It's a cast iron rotor, this is normal.

I do agree that some upgrades to the standard braking system are in order.

Except you can leave the disc and upgrade the master cylinder.
