Lucas SR2

My Magneto finally arrived
It looks like it has a special points mounting plate?
It also came with a decent mounting plate where a k2f would mount
At least it's easy to change the condenser and the coil on these
Plus no cam to worry about
I hope it actually works 🤣🤣🤣🤣

Hmmm, it is different from mine, mine has a full bakelite cap. Yours seem to be a aero or milotary version, fully metal incapsulated against adio interferance. You got is running yet? What sometimes really improves the magneto is adjusting the e-gap as mentioned in the lucas manual. Cam ( below the distributor) is still a worry, it defines wether or not the magneto fires each 360 crank revolution, so two lobes need to bee 180 degrees apart. The cam can be replaced.
A good sr2 gives ine hell of a spark even at low revolutions.

Not used it yet
I plan to run it on an atlas engine
It gives a really good spark when flicked over by hand
I'm guessing it's military
I don't know it's history as the seller was the most awkward person on the planet
But basically it's from a deceased estate where someone had fabricated the triangular mounting plate so presumably it was to replace a Lucas k2f
It turns the correct way for a Norton engine
I plan to run it with a standard advance and retard unit

Look pretty close to a Joe Hunt magneto in body and all, if it was my project I be spending the money on the new 4 rare earth JH magneto for bigger spark and reliability, they sit behind the cylinders, I wouldn't even worry about setting it up with the auto advance unit as they fire up on first kick without it, but that's me, I am a big fan of the JHs my Manxman project bike will get a new JH if the Lucas competition maggie plays up as just as cheap to buy new than getting them rebuilt and have a better ignition set up and hotter spark, they don't need to be retarded to fire up.

Why does any magneto need to be retarded to fire up ? I suggest they are retarded to stop the motor from kicking-back. If you are silly when kick starting a motor, and don't keep pressure on the lever, you will get bitten. Who is the master - you or the bike ? I can understand how somebody who is not accustomed to kick-starting old motorcycles can get hurt, but for anyone who is experienced, it should never be an issue. My road bikes never had the means of retarding the ignition. If they kicked back, I could always hold the kick-back. If your foot is loose on the kick-start lever, you cannot hold a kick-back. Always stand astride the bike- some idiots try to kick-start from beside the bike.

Blimey I must be an idiot without realising it!
Sometimes I kick a bike over sitting astride
Sometimes I stand next to the bike
At least I now know what I've been doing wrong for 49 years
Cheers Ai
👍👍👍👍

I just adjust the timing till I get a little kickback then just ever slightly retard the timing till no kickback, I always kick my Norton over while sitting on it as I don't use my stand to kick, in fact rode for 20 years without any side stand, I have the Norton knack, but Al don't you use a roller start for your bike, so how long have you ever kicked your Norton over with your foot/leg, Triumphs are a lot more easier to kick over than a Norton.

I never keep pressure on the kick start. I know it can be done, but if you want to get launched that is one way to do it if you let up at the wrong time. I am not a big heavy weight beer bellied back marker though, so I like taking care of my kicking leg.

That I can agree with 100%
