Not sure this would apply to anyone but myself since I use a couple of fuel additives. It may however be useful to FCR owners that use ethanol fuel.
I was doing a needle clip position change 4 months. When I pulled the needles out I noticed a dull brown film on the needles and a ring of weird looking green buildup in the same spot on both needles. I hadn't had the needles out for close to a year. So I got out a pad of scotch brite and cleaned off the green ring and the film. The scotch brite only worked rubbing it across the needle, not up and down the needle. Sounds odd, but that is how it went. Once reinstalled after moving the needle clip up one notch and putting a half clip position spacer washer under the clip, and putting the fuel tank back on, I fired it up. The engine was easier to start, idled better, and ran like a modern motorcycle except for the Norton rattling part. I checked the needles today after 4 months. The same dull brown film was there, but the green ring location I noted last time I cleaned the needles only had a darker dull brown ring. Cleaning the needles up does make a noticeable difference if you have a feel for that kind of thing.
Might want to check your needles once in a while and clean them up if you have FCRs. If running race gas and pure non-ethanol, the film might not every build up. I don't know though, since I mix non-ethanol with premium pump gas. Also use Stabil and an octane booster. If you think I need to hear what you think about octane booster or stabil, I don't. Just want to nip that in the bud.
