I am just putting the gearbox back together on my MK2 and and doing a dry assembly with just the layshaft assembled to check the end float. Without a gasket fitted, I have about 2.5 mm which seems a heck of a lot? Can anyone tell how much the outer race of the layshsft roller bearing protrudes from the casing, mine is about 0.5 mm.

The SOP is to shim behind the kicker shaft. www.oldbritts.com has a tutorial

Just done mine, also had about that much sticking out of the layshaft face. I ended up with about one mm of rear iso shims behind kickstart shaft to get about 5 thou endfloat. You will have to open up the ID of the rear iso shims with a grinder or file or they will sit on the radii of the kickstart shaft.
