Well that may be a little sensationalist. We stay in Bude, Cornwall regularly and on Thursday our friend suggested we try the bar of a hotel that has recently be refurbished by new owners. As I walked up to the entrance I couldn’t believe my eyes. A Norton commando in middle of the room enclosed in a glass case with a wooden (table) top. What’s more it appeared to be new and unused. The barmaid pointed me towards some information on the wall and it was described as the last ever Norton Commando and was sold to Ray Petty. I have read elsewhere that there was yet one more made and not offered for sale to the public. That one was auctioned by Bonham’s. See below.
The Cornish Commando is also still listed here: http://www.carandclassic.co.uk/car/C561419. The purchaser must have been the owner of the hotel, An Mor, in Bude. This is probably engine/frame no. 336538 as 336539 was sold at auction by Bonham’s in 2011: http://www.bonhams.com/auctions/19163/lot/455/
A sinner has painted the letters on the tyres and another sinner dropped something on the tank at some stage as there is a little ding that has been painted over. Other than that it looks just like it was as it came out of the factory. I am firmly on the side of it must not be ridden and kept as new but of course I would have to have a second Commando to actually use, preferably a brand new one from Norvil. Make that two or three in different guises from Norvil.
I remember seeing 336539 on the wall in Carl Rosner’s showroom in 1991 along with an unregistered T160. He said they were his pension.
