Incandescent bulbs dont care about polarity. Some LEDs do, but there are types now that do not. Things a get sticky with modern devices which do require negative ground...they bolt to a frame point and expect it to be negative. Id like to fit a brake light flasher amd turn signal auto cancel on my commamdo for added safety in urban traffic but most of these devices expect negative ground.
 
BTW, unlike most bikes, the frame is not a good ground on a Commando since the engine is isolated from the frame. The frame may test as a good ground, but do not count on it.

I use a M-stop flasher from Moto-Gadget with my positive ground that I just switched the leads.Signals turn off after 20 seconds plus is very small.It’s been on now for over 2 years with no problems. I am also looking for a flashing brake light so let me know if you find anything.

Ludwig recommended this to replace my directional flasher. I have it set for 8 flashes and then it automatically turns my directional flashers off. My fairing prevents me from seeing the front pyramid flashers on the outside of the fairing so this relay has probably saved my ass a few times by turning off my directionals when I forget... I've had it for many years with no issues... It can be used as a brake light flasher or a directional canceling flasher. You would need 2 of them to do both of those functions.

You are right to be concerned about positive or negative earth. My bike has a Boyer ignition system which operates 'total loss'. If I fit the battery with the terminals towards me, the short lead attaches to the correct terminal. I forget whether the earth is positive or negative, If I get it wrong, the smoke would probably escape from the Boyer. Once that happens with electronics, they become less effective. Standardisation is opposed by some manufacturers - it probably sells fewer parts.
Is the white and brown colour-coded lead the positive or is it the white and black ? - BULLSHIT ! In the olden days, it was either red or black. Many people do not know how the standardisation process works and who is involved. ANSI would be worst for manipulation - the lobby groups.
