Just a quick question....Regarding the clutch operation ..How much doe's the push rod move when the lever is full back on the bar [cable type]...and how much would it need to move to release the clutch? Eg it it was 4mm full, would 3mm be OK?

1) it depends on type of operating cam.....Cdo and Atlas cams are different. See AtlanticGreen.com for more info.

2) This could easily be measured by removing primary cover ( or inspection plug if you have one). it may be possible to get a reasonable measurement thru the gearbox inspection cover.

3) it depends on center distance of handlebar operating lever.

Clutch rod only needs to move enough to release plates so nil drag on tranny, which in my case is ~1/4 turn out of clutch adjuster mostly going by feel of release after a break in period if new plate wet with AFT. 3mm likely over kill but a good start to diddle closer for best clutch plate opening when lever pulled.

Thanks Lab!

You are so help full, as soon as i asked the question..you whizzed into the garage, Vern out, plug out..Tar ..last question will it work OK with just 2mm of release?

Tex, Yes the lever fulcrum....Did'nt consider that..are they about the same?

Sorry to disillusion you, but it's an old photo from a previous discussion.

I somehow doubt that.

.080 might get it done if everything is new and clean the the clutch stack height is just right.

A few hundred miles down the road it will not be enough for a clean release. Jim

Thanks Jim , That what i was hopeing
Reason is i only have two fingers on my left hand, the two middle [whats left] have no power...i wanted to increase the handle bar lever [shorten the fulcrum] by a 1/3rd ..easy pull but reduced movement.

If you have long fingers, then you could also trim the lever so it sits out further, giving you more travel. Probably fit a Teflon lined cable as well [ although I have no experience of these not the need yet ]
When I did my mod on the brake m/cyl, I trimmed that lever to allow me a bit extra travel.
All the best, Dereck

Have you tried adjusting the stack height?

+1
this is important to get easy pull clutch.

The Venhill (sp?) Teflon lined cables reduce clutch pull by about 25%. You should look into these cables.....not too expensive....got mine from the UK for about $30.

It is my understanding, the Atlas operating cam has more mechanical advantage than the Cdo, which of course means less rod travel. If so, this is an alternative to changing the handlebar operating lever.

I am not where I can measure it, but I think the Atlas handlebar operating fulcrum distance is 7/8 inch.

As others have stated, getting the stack height just right is crucial for easy clutch pull, keeping it just right is doubtful.

Hope you get it worked out.

It will work with the Atlas/Dommie lever my bike originally came with. It only gave 0.100" travel so neutral finding and first gear selection was not great. Superlight though, easily 2 fingers with Venhill featherlight cable.

Sounds like your a good candidate for one of Jim Commstocks hydraulic clutch mods... I hear it's very easy to install & works great..

[....Learn't something today, what uses cable like that, ?
thanks for some GOOD info
+1 on the good info......also.....seems like the hydraulic clutch mod would work here....and I believe that you can get adjustable cam type levers effectively changing the fulcrum and also think that you can get levers with different bend profiles, might also help in this situation.
